The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to resume industrial action nationwide beginning Monday, January 12, 2026. The decision followed an emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on January 2, where members reviewed the government’s response to their long-standing demands.
In a statement issued after the meeting, NARD said the strike was necessitated by what it described as the federal government’s failure to fully address critical welfare and professional issues affecting resident doctors across the country. The association expressed frustration over unresolved matters despite repeated engagements with relevant authorities

The statement, signed by NARD President, Dr Muhammad Suleiman, said the E-NEC unanimously resolved that the strike would commence at exactly 12:00 a.m. on January 12, 2026. He noted that the action would be total and nationwide if no last-minute breakthrough is achieved.
As part of mobilisation for the strike, the NEC directed all 91 NARD centres across the country to hold congress meetings and organise press conferences. According to the association, these activities are aimed at sensitising the public and drawing attention to the demands of resident doctors, as well as the potential impact of the strike on healthcare delivery nationwide.
