Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reportedly asked the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to resign over the accumulation of refuse in parts of the state. According to a report by The PUNCH, a source within LAWMA said the governor had become dissatisfied with the agency’s handling of the waste management crisis, particularly the slow evacuation of refuse from roads, residential areas and drainage channels.

The LAWMA insider attributed the reported decision to Gbadegesin’s alleged failure to act promptly on directives issued by Sanwo-Olu to improve waste evacuation. The source said the governor had visited the Olusosun Dumpsite in Ojota about a month earlier and expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, directing that urgent action be taken after declaring a state of emergency on waste management.
According to the source, the governor was upset that conditions had reportedly failed to improve, prompting him to ask the agency chief to resign over the weekend. The source further claimed that Gbadegesin was appealing to the governor and had contacted prominent Lagosians to intervene on his behalf.
The reported development comes amid complaints from residents about refuse accumulation and unpleasant odours in several parts of Lagos, including Mushin, Egbeda, Surulere, Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Ojo, Obalende, Apapa and Mile 2.
The situation has raised concerns about environmental sanitation, public health and the impact of poor waste disposal on businesses and residents’ daily lives. However, the reported resignation request has not been independently confirmed in the supplied material, and no official response from Sanwo-Olu or Gbadegesin was included in the report.
