The chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has said that individuals spreading rumours about Nigeria’s new tax laws are largely tax avoiders seeking to mislead the public. He dismissed claims circulating on social media that personal bank transfers would be taxed under the new regime.

Adedeji clarified that the allegations, particularly around the use of bank transfer narrations for taxation, are false and intended to create unnecessary fear among citizens. According to him, there is no policy targeting personal transfers or scrutinising narrations attached to routine bank transactions.

“Nobody will look for narration,” the NRS chairman said, stressing that the tax authority is focused on legitimate income assessment and compliance, not personal financial movements between individuals.

He accused promoters of the rumours of deliberately spreading misinformation to undermine tax reforms and protect their own interests. “Those people you see promoting all these rumours, and misinformation, are those people that are avoiding taxes,” Adedeji stated.

The NRS chairman urged Nigerians to ignore unverified claims and rely on official communication, adding that the new tax laws are designed to improve fairness, transparency and revenue generation without imposing undue burdens on ordinary citizens.
