Tinubu Returns To Abuja After Umrah Pilgrimage In Saudi Arabia

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after completing his visit to Saudi Arabia, where he performed the Umrah pilgrimage in the holy city of Makkah.

The President’s aircraft landed in Abuja at approximately 8:53 p.m. local time on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

Tinubu was received at the airport by senior government officials, including his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; the Minister of Education; and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.

Other government officials were also present to welcome the President.

Tinubu Performs Umrah In Makkah

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, Tinubu performed the Umrah, commonly known as the Lesser Hajj, in Makkah.

The pilgrimage is a religious obligation that Muslims can undertake at any time of the year, unlike the annual Hajj, which takes place during a specific period of the Islamic calendar.

The President’s visit attracted public attention, particularly amid discussions about its possible political implications ahead of the 2027 general election.

Presidency Rejects Claims Of Political Motive

Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, Ademola Oshodi, has dismissed suggestions that Tinubu travelled to Saudi Arabia to win the support of northern voters ahead of the 2027 election.

Oshodi made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

He argued that the President’s pilgrimage should be viewed from a religious and national perspective rather than through political considerations.

According to the presidential aide, Tinubu’s access to the Holy Kaaba was significant to Muslims across Nigeria and should not be interpreted as an attempt to appeal to a particular region.

Oshodi: Umrah Is Significant To Nigerian Muslims

Oshodi maintained that public opinion in Nigeria was diverse and that the President’s religious experience should not be reduced to electoral calculations.

He said the opportunity was significant to Muslims across the country, irrespective of whether they came from the North or South.

The presidential aide also described the experience as a moment of national significance, noting that Tinubu was the first South-West leader to receive the honour, as he put it.

Oshodi further stated that the President had performed both Umrah and Hajj several times in his lifetime, insisting that his latest visit was not politically motivated.

His comments came amid public debate over the timing and significance of the President’s Saudi Arabia trip as political activities gradually build towards the 2027 elections.
