The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Major Agbo, has advised Nigerians questioning President Bola Tinubu’s declared educational qualifications to seek legal interpretation through the courts rather than engage in public debate. Speaking in an interview with Punch, Agbo argued that Nigeria’s Constitution clearly stipulates the minimum educational qualification required for anyone seeking the office of President and said those dissatisfied with the documents published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should pursue judicial remedies instead of relying on public opinion.

Agbo explained that the law requires a presidential candidate to possess at least a secondary school qualification, adding that candidates are free to declare any certificate that meets or exceeds that minimum standard. According to him, Tinubu’s submission of a Bachelor of Science degree certificate from Chicago State University falls within the legal requirements for contesting the presidency.

He maintained that if Nigerians wanted clarification regarding the President’s primary and secondary school education, the appropriate avenue was to approach a competent court for interpretation. “The law states that you should declare anything that is not less than SSCE. And that is exactly what INEC has done,” he said.

The NNPP chairman further argued that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to challenge the credentials of any political officeholder or aspirant but stressed that such disputes should be resolved by the judiciary rather than through public speculation. He questioned the value of repeatedly trying public officials in the “court of public opinion,” insisting that the practice had not strengthened Nigeria’s democracy.

Agbo therefore urged critics of Tinubu’s nomination documents to file appropriate legal actions if they believed the President’s qualifications did not comply with the law, instead of continuing the controversy through political statements and media commentary.
