Tragedy in Mushin: 12-Year-Old Boy Killed by Stray Bullet During Cult Clash

The Mushin area of Lagos State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday night following the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy, Wasiu, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a violent cult clash in the Olosha community. The heartbreaking incident, which occurred around 8 pm, has reignited concerns over the rising wave of cult-related violence plaguing several Lagos neighborhoods.
Eyewitnesses and local residents reported that the clash broke out suddenly as rival cult groups engaged in a fierce gun battle, forcing residents and traders to abandon their activities and scramble for safety. Wasiu, an innocent bystander, had reportedly stepped out to buy food from a local vendor, known as Iya Ibeji, when the chaos erupted.

Using the focus keyword A, the incident has drawn sharp reactions from residents and local authorities alike, with many calling for urgent and decisive action to curb the escalating violence. According to Tale Amoo, a resident of the area, the shooting caused widespread panic. “We started hearing sounds of gunshots around 8 pm, and people started running into their homes while business owners closed their shops,” Amoo recounted. “Wasiu was waiting to buy food when he got caught up in the clash. While trying to flee, he was hit by a stray bullet.”
Another resident, who asked not to be named, said that by the time the gunfire ceased, Wasiu’s body was found motionless on the ground. Efforts to rush him to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) were unsuccessful, as access to the facility was blocked. “The gate was shut, and with cultists still loitering, residents were afraid to use alternative routes. That delay cost the boy his life,” the resident lamented.
The incident is the latest in a string of cult-related violence that has terrorized Mushin in recent days. Locals reported that for several hours on Wednesday, gunshots echoed around the LUTH vicinity, with terrified residents hiding indoors.

Local Authorities React to the Violence
In response to the tragedy, Tubosun Aruwe, Vice Chairman of Mushin Local Government, issued a statement on Thursday condemning the attack and expressing profound sorrow over the death of the young boy. “I am deeply saddened and utterly appalled by the senseless and violent attack that occurred last night in the Olosha area,” the statement read.
He added, “The loss of the innocent life of a 10-year-old child is a tragedy that strikes at the very heart of our humanity.” Aruwe, while offering his condolences to Wasiu’s family and others affected by similar attacks, vowed to support efforts aimed at securing justice for the victims.
“My heart goes out to the families of all the victims during this challenging time. I share in your grief and stand with you as we seek justice for these senseless killings,” he said.
Call for Urgent Security Response
In light of the recurring violence, Aruwe has called on the Lagos State Police Command and other security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and apprehend the perpetrators. The continued silence from law enforcement, especially in the wake of growing public concern, has only deepened the frustration and anxiety in the community.
When contacted to confirm if the police had made any arrests or were aware of the incident, the state police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to calls or WhatsApp messages sent to his phone as of Thursday evening.
Community in Fear, Residents Demand Protection
The killing of Wasiu has intensified the feeling of insecurity among Mushin residents. Many fear that unless authorities act decisively, the area could descend into further chaos. “We can’t continue like this,” a shop owner in Olosha said. “Children are being killed, and cultists are roaming freely. We need the government to act now.”
The tragic death of an innocent boy has left an indelible scar on the community, underscoring the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach to end the culture of violence—beginning with robust law enforcement, community vigilance, and strong political will.
For now, Mushin mourns yet another young life lost too soon.
