Two newly deployed Mobile Police officers have been killed after armed attackers reportedly ambushed them in Ayilamo community, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The latest incident has increased the number of police personnel killed in Ayilamo to six within three days, deepening concerns over security in the community and surrounding areas.

The attack occurred at about 6pm on Monday as the officers were reportedly travelling to meet and escort the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo, who was returning to the community from Makurdi.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident to journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday.

According to Aondongu, the DPO’s entourage came under attack while returning from Makurdi to Ayilamo, resulting in the deaths of two police officers.

He said the deceased officers were among personnel recently deployed to the area, although their identities had not been released at the time of filing the report.

The circumstances surrounding the ambush have raised fresh concerns about the security situation in Logo LGA, particularly the vulnerability of police personnel operating in the area.

 Police Officers Targeted in Fresh Ayilamo Attack

The latest killings occurred only three days after another deadly attack in Ayilamo claimed the lives of four Mobile Police officers and seven civilians.

The repeated attacks have heightened anxiety among residents, with community members expressing concerns about the presence and movement of armed groups around the area.

Residents who spoke to newsmen, according to reports, attributed the latest violence to suspected armed invaders allegedly operating from forests and abandoned settlements within Tombo Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area.

They raised concerns about reports of armed men moving through forested areas and deserted communities, which they believe could provide hiding places for attackers.

The residents have consequently called for sustained security operations in the area to prevent additional attacks and improve protection for civilians and security personnel.

The latest incident also highlights the risks faced by police officers deployed to communities experiencing persistent security challenges.

The officers were reportedly travelling to meet the DPO when the attackers struck, underscoring concerns about the security of routes linking Ayilamo with other parts of the state.

Police authorities have not publicly disclosed details about the attackers or confirmed whether arrests have been made in connection with the latest incident.

The identities of the two slain officers were also yet to be officially released as of the time of the report.

With six police officers reportedly killed in Ayilamo within three days, residents are seeking stronger and sustained security intervention rather than temporary responses following individual attacks.

The community’s calls come amid broader concerns over the safety of settlements located close to forests and abandoned villages that residents say may be exploited by armed groups.

Security agencies are expected to continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the attacks and identify those responsible.

For residents, however, the immediate priority remains preventing further loss of lives and restoring confidence in the security situation across Ayilamo and neighbouring communities in Logo LGA.

The latest deaths have therefore added urgency to calls for intensified security operations, particularly in areas identified by residents as vulnerable to attacks.
