A fierce political exchange has erupted between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, sending fresh shockwaves through Nigeria’s political space and deepening tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The clash followed Governor Bala’s public criticism of the Federal Government, where he alleged intimidation of opposition figures and warned against what he described as the shrinking space for dissent. His remarks were widely interpreted as a swipe at the administration of President Bola Tinubu and its allies.

Wike, in a sharp response, dismissed the claims as political grandstanding, accusing some governors of hiding behind accusations to mask governance failures. He maintained that the Federal Government was focused on reforms and stability, not political persecution.
Unmoved, Bala fired back, accusing the former Rivers State governor of acting as a political shield for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while still laying claim to PDP membership. He insisted that his stance was driven by principle and the need to protect democratic values.
The heated exchange has laid bare the deepening fault lines within the PDP, with analysts warning that the ongoing rift could further weaken the party’s cohesion ahead of future political contests.
