Political scrutiny: the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly claimed about his health, asserting that he is in perfect condition and very much active in service. Wike made the declaration during an exclusive interview with BBC Pidgin, set for broadcast on Saturday evening, where he dismissed the rumors as malicious fabrications designed by political adversaries to weaken his public image.

Responding to the speculation that he collapsed at the Presidential Villa earlier in April, Wike stated confidently, “As I’m talking to you, do I look like somebody that is sick? Looking at me, will you think I’m above 30 years? I’m very well.” His energetic tone and visible appearance in recent public events reinforce his statement, particularly his attendance at a Sallah homage event with President Bola Tinubu just days after the rumoured incident.

Wike also addressed criticisms about his family, particularly a rising conversation around him allegedly grooming his son for politics. In his characteristically direct tone, Wike responded, “What’s wrong with that?” He posed the rhetorical question to challenge the prevalent narrative that children of political elites should be discouraged from entering public service.

Although Wike’s clarification on both his health and family matters was intended to neutralize recent public criticisms, it did little to calm tensions within his former party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where voices like Umar Sani have accused the FCT Minister of being a divisive force.

Umar Sani, who served as the spokesman for the PDP’s 2019 presidential campaign, delivered a scathing critique of Wike’s political history. In a detailed public statement, Sani described Wike as a destabilizing agent within the PDP whose actions have not been in the service of reform, but rather, self-interest and personal ambition.

“In the ever-evolving theater of Nigerian politics, few figures are as polarizing and unpredictable as Chief Nyesom Wike,” Sani wrote. “Once a formidable force within the PDP, Wike has transformed into one of its most destabilizing elements, wielding his influence not to build or reform, but to undermine and dismantle.”

Sani listed several controversial instances to support his claims. He pointed to Wike’s support for Senator Ali Modu Sheriff during the party’s leadership crisis in 2016, which nearly tore the PDP apart. Wike was also accused of backing Uche Secondus and Iyorchia Ayu to the party’s national leadership positions, only to allegedly orchestrate their eventual downfalls when their interests diverged from his.

“Wike often cloaks his political maneuvers in the rhetoric of justice and equity, but his actions betray a deeper fixation on personal ambition and dominance,” Sani stated, further noting how Wike’s endorsement of Siminalayi Fubara as Rivers State Governor has now morphed into a political battle between the former allies.

The internal party conflicts are not the only areas of concern. Sani also warned that Wike’s growing alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move seen as strategic ahead of the 2027 elections, may ultimately backfire. He characterized Wike’s political style as one that burns bridges too quickly, leaving behind mistrust and fractured alliances.

“This is not dissent in pursuit of reform; it is sabotage masquerading as strategy,” Sani said. “As Wike aligns himself with the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, he will soon learn that history is ruthless to those who burn every bridge they cross.”

Future Still Uncertain for the FCT Minister

While Wike remains steadfast in dismissing criticisms and asserting his fitness for duty, the political climate surrounding him continues to intensify. The attacks from opposition figures, alongside growing skepticism within his own support base, reveal a complex narrative — one that oscillates between loyalty, ambition, and the high stakes of Nigerian political survival.

Despite the backlash, Wike shows no signs of retreat. His public appearances and media engagements suggest a leader who remains defiant and unshaken, determined to chart his own course regardless of party affiliations or public opinion. As 2027 approaches, political analysts will closely watch how his alignment with the APC evolves, and whether he can maintain relevance in Nigeria’s ever-shifting political landscape.

For now, Wike appears healthy, assertive, and unwilling to yield to the criticisms — standing firm in a storm of both political opposition and public skepticism.
