China has officially launched the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) in Shanghai, marking a significant step toward strengthening international collaboration on artificial intelligence governance and development.

The organization was established with 29 founding member countries, all of which signed the founding agreement during the inauguration ceremony.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres attended the event and described the creation of WAICO as a “natural development” in the evolving global framework for artificial intelligence governance. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation to ensure AI technologies are developed and deployed in a safe, inclusive and responsible manner.

As part of its commitment to supporting global AI development, China announced that it will provide 5,000 artificial intelligence training opportunities for professionals from developing countries over the next five years.

According to Chinese officials, the initiative is aimed at narrowing the global digital divide, enhancing technical expertise and enabling developing nations to participate more effectively in the rapidly expanding AI economy.

The establishment of WAICO is expected to serve as a platform for member countries to coordinate AI policies, promote research and innovation, encourage knowledge sharing and address challenges related to AI ethics, security and regulation.

The launch comes amid increasing global efforts to establish international standards for artificial intelligence as governments and technology leaders seek to balance innovation with responsible governance and public safety.
