The All Progressives Congress (APC) is considering adopting direct primaries in some states ahead of the 2027 general elections, as internal disagreements continue to threaten party unity.
According to a report, the move may see the ruling party abandon its consensus candidate strategy in flashpoint states where negotiations among stakeholders have stalled.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that direct primaries could be introduced in states where agreements on candidates prove difficult, especially as the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) draws closer.
The party is also expected to unveil its timetable for the 2027 primaries, covering aspirants for the presidential, governorship, and National Assembly elections.
It was gathered that APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, recently presented the timetable to President Bola Tinubu, who has reportedly given his approval ahead of its official release.
While consensus arrangements have reportedly been finalised in Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states, negotiations remain unresolved in several others, including Nasarawa, Kwara, Adamawa, Yobe, and Bauchi.
Party insiders revealed that incumbent governors are being given significant influence in selecting their successors. However, disagreements over preferred candidates in some states have complicated the process.
A senior party source noted that consensus cannot be imposed where stakeholders refuse to align, warning that doing so could trigger internal rebellion, defections, or anti-party activities.
According to the source, direct primaries are increasingly being considered as a more transparent and democratic alternative in such situations.
There are also indications that President Tinubu may personally intervene in some states to help resolve lingering disputes and maintain party cohesion ahead of the elections.
The APC is racing against time to conclude its primaries and submit its candidates’ list to INEC before the official deadline.
