ABUJA, NIGERIA — Campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections officially begin today, marking the start of a crucial 150-day countdown to Election Day on January 16, 2027.

The commencement of campaigns is expected to intensify political activities across the country as presidential candidates, political parties and National Assembly contenders begin presenting their programmes and seeking the support of Nigerian voters.

The campaign period will provide candidates with an opportunity to engage citizens, unveil their policy priorities and make their cases for the presidency, Senate and House of Representatives ahead of the elections.

With 150 days remaining until January 16, 2027, political parties are expected to mobilise their structures across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory while candidates embark on rallies, town-hall meetings, media engagements and grassroots consultations.

The election is expected to be closely contested, with major political parties and emerging opposition coalitions positioning themselves for a strong challenge at the national level.

As campaigns commence, attention will also focus on the conduct of political actors, campaign financing, security, issue-based messaging and compliance with electoral laws and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Political parties and candidates are expected to maintain peaceful campaigns and avoid inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech, violence and other actions capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
