Nigeria’s political space continues to expand ahead of the 2027 general elections as renowned economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen officially declared his intention to contest for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress. His entry into the race adds to a growing list of prominent figures positioning themselves for the nation’s top office.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Hayatu-Deen outlined his motivation for entering the race, citing worsening economic conditions, rising insecurity, and governance challenges as key drivers. He expressed concern over the daily struggles faced by Nigerians, pointing to escalating food and fuel prices as indicators of deeper systemic issues.

“This is not the Nigeria we deserve,” he said, emphasizing the urgency for a shift in leadership direction and policy focus.

Hayatu-Deen’s declaration is anchored on addressing what he described as the twin crises of economic hardship and insecurity. According to him, many Nigerians are finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs, while insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods across the country.
He criticized what he sees as a disconnect between the government and the people, arguing that current policies have placed undue pressure on households and businesses. His remarks reflect a broader sentiment among opposition figures who are calling for reforms and greater responsiveness in governance.
The presidential hopeful pledged to deliver practical solutions, focusing on stabilising the economy, restoring security, and rebuilding public trust. He stressed that leadership must be both experienced and steady to navigate Nigeria’s complex challenges.
Drawing from over four decades in the financial sector, Hayatu-Deen highlighted his experience in economic reforms, investment facilitation, and institutional turnaround. His past roles include leadership positions in banking and policy advisory, which he believes position him as a credible alternative.

Hayatu-Deen is widely respected for his contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. He previously served as Managing Director and later Chairman of FSB International Bank, where he led a significant transformation of the institution.
He also chaired the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, playing a key role in shaping policy discussions and reform initiatives. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the national honour of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2000.
His campaign message emphasizes competence, stability, and results-driven leadership, qualities he argues are essential for addressing Nigeria’s current challenges.
With his declaration, Hayatu-Deen joins other prominent figures who have indicated interest in the 2027 presidential race, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi. The increasing number of aspirants signals a highly competitive election cycle.
Hayatu-Deen also called on members of the ADC to remain united, stressing that internal cohesion will be critical to the party’s success. He noted that Nigerians are seeking a credible alternative, and the ADC must rise to meet those expectations.
As political activities intensify, analysts believe that early declarations such as this will shape alliances, influence party dynamics, and set the tone for campaign strategies.
With the 2027 elections still ahead, Hayatu-Deen’s entry introduces a technocratic dimension to the race, potentially appealing to voters seeking economic expertise and structured reforms. Whether his message resonates widely will become clearer as the political landscape continues to evolve.
