Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has revealed that an Independent Power Plant, designed to provide continuous 24-hour electricity to key areas of Abeokuta, will be commissioned in the next eight weeks. He shared this update after inspecting the 30-megawatt facility in Onijanganjangan, near Ewekoro, on Monday.
This initiative is part of the first phase of the Ogun State Light Up Project, a collaborative effort with private companies. Governor Abiodun highlighted that this project reflects his government’s dedication to ensuring dependable electricity throughout the state.
He stated, “Today, we are witnessing the initial implementation of our Ogun State Light Up Project.
This first phase involves a 30 Megawatt power generation that will serve Abeokuta. While the city will require more than 30 Megawatts, this is just the beginning of our planned 100 Megawatt capacity. I’ve inspected the site, including the control room, turbines, and gas compression systems.”
He added that gas pipelines are expected to be completed in three to six weeks, with diesel as a backup fuel source.
“I am confident that, by God’s grace, in eight weeks, we’ll be back here to inaugurate this plant for the benefit of Abeokuta residents,” Abiodun said, noting that although not all of Abeokuta would be covered initially, significant parts of the city would experience unprecedented uninterrupted power supply.
The governor was particularly impressed with the quality of work on site, explaining how the plant would primarily use compressed gas but would switch to diesel if gas supplies were disrupted. He mentioned that a soft commissioning using diesel would start in two to three weeks, with full commissioning expected in six to eight weeks.
Abiodun further explained that the plant would initially power government structures like offices, health facilities, police stations, and educational institutions, with plans to extend this service to private sectors as capacity grows. He also noted the state’s decision to engage in power generation, distribution, and transmission following its removal from the federal exclusive list, with plans for similar plants in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota.
The Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission has been established by law to regulate the state’s power sector activities. The Project Manager, Mr. Selvin Leo, confirmed that the project is 90% complete, promising a swift completion with the right support and materials.
