ADC Spokesperson Slams Tinubu Over Deserted Nigerian Booth at Tokyo Conference

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of incompetence following reports that Nigeria’s booth at the ongoing Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) was left unmanned.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi criticized the government, questioning why Nigeria could not properly represent itself at such a prestigious global forum despite the President traveling to Japan with what he described as a “robust entourage.”

Abdullahi Criticizes Government’s Handling
Abdullahi did not mince words in condemning the development, arguing that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet again embarrassed the country on the international stage.
“The APC government’s incompetence has followed the President to Japan,” Abdullahi said. “The President traveled with a large entourage, yet there was no one at the Nigerian booth. After this jamboree, who will follow up to ensure that Nigeria actually benefits from TICAD9?”
He further accused the Tinubu-led government of poor judgment in appointments, referencing the controversial nomination of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, also known as KWAM 1, as a cultural ambassador.
“When we asked them to appoint ambassadors, they went ahead and appointed KWAM 1. Nigerians, this is what ‘anyhowness’ looks like,” Abdullahi added, lamenting what he described as misplaced priorities by the administration.
Photos of Deserted Booth Spark Outrage
The controversy began after Idris Ayodeji Bello, a Nigerian attendee at TICAD9, shared photos on social media showing Nigeria’s booth empty while other African nations were actively represented.
“I hate to show negative things about Nigeria, but it is sad that Nigeria is the only unmanned booth at TICAD9 in Japan. Upon all the folks who probably got estacode for coming to Japan,” Bello tweeted on Wednesday.
His post quickly went viral, sparking outrage among Nigerians who questioned the purpose of sending large delegations abroad when basic representation is not ensured. Many social media users described the incident as yet another example of government inefficiency and wastefulness.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responds
In response to the backlash, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a clarification via its official X handle. The ministry denied that the booth was abandoned, insisting that it had not yet been inaugurated at the time the viral photos were taken.
“Contrary to a tweet made by a participant at TICAD, the Nigerian Booth at #TICAD9 has not yet been opened. The booth will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, 21st August 2025, after which it will become fully operational and serve the delegates of TICAD,” the ministry explained.
The statement suggested that Nigeria’s booth was still in preparation and would be operational once officially launched. However, critics argued that the clarification came too late to quell the negative impressions already circulating online.
Nigeria’s Image at Stake
Analysts say the controversy once again raises questions about Nigeria’s diplomatic preparedness and its seriousness in global engagements. TICAD, co-hosted by Japan and the United Nations, is regarded as one of Africa’s most important international conferences, providing a platform for partnerships in trade, technology, and development.
A deserted Nigerian booth at such a gathering, critics argue, projects a poor image of Africa’s largest economy, especially at a time when the country is seeking greater foreign investment.
Political observers also noted that the incident plays into ongoing criticisms of the Tinubu administration, which has faced mounting public discontent over economic hardship, alleged wasteful spending, and controversial appointments.
Abdullahi’s Political Standpoint
For Bolaji Abdullahi and the ADC, the incident symbolizes what they describe as “chronic incompetence” within the APC government. Abdullahi, a former Minister of Youth and Sports, has emerged as one of the vocal critics of the current administration, using the incident to highlight broader governance failures.
He argued that beyond the empty booth, Nigeria’s representation at TICAD9 risks being reduced to a mere political show with little tangible outcome for citizens back home.
“The tragedy of this administration is that everything is reduced to photo-ops and jamborees. Nigeria deserves more than empty booths and hollow promises,” he said.
While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists that the Nigerian booth will be fully operational once inaugurated, the damage to Nigeria’s public image may already have been done. Many Nigerians have expressed skepticism, questioning whether meaningful follow-up will occur after the conference concludes.
TICAD9 represents a significant opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its economic potential and attract strategic partnerships. However, critics fear that the latest controversy risks overshadowing these opportunities, with the focus shifting instead to issues of mismanagement and incompetence.
As the conference continues, all eyes will be on whether Nigeria can redeem its image and present a convincing case to international partners. For now, the viral images of an empty booth serve as a stark reminder of the gap between expectations and delivery in the country’s foreign engagements.
