Political momentum is building in Lagos State as key figures emerge as early contenders for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections. Among those leading early discussions are former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, serving senator Adetokunbo Abiru, and Minister of State for Health Tunji Alausa.
The rising political activity follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, instructing appointees with electoral ambitions to resign by March 31. The move has triggered intense consultations, alliances, and strategic positioning within party ranks across Lagos.

Sources within the party suggest that zoning arrangements are already shaping early calculations, with strong indications that the APC ticket may be allocated to the Lagos East senatorial district. This development has significantly boosted the visibility of aspirants from the zone.

The possible zoning to Lagos East has placed Ambode, Abiru, and Alausa at the forefront of conversations. Each brings a unique political profile—Ambode with executive experience, Abiru with legislative credentials, and Alausa with federal cabinet exposure.
Beyond the leading trio, other influential figures are also being mentioned in ongoing consultations. These include Jimi Benson, a member of the House of Representatives, as well as presidential aides like Hakeem Muri-Okunola and Femi Gbajabiamila.
Party insiders, however, emphasize that discussions remain fluid, with no official decision yet announced by the APC leadership regarding zoning or preferred candidates.
Attention is also turning to the Lagos West senatorial district, where a possible power-sharing arrangement could see the deputy governorship slot allocated. This has sparked parallel consultations among stakeholders in the region, all aiming to secure strategic relevance in the final ticket configuration.
Among those being considered for the deputy position are Jumoke Oduwole and Ramota Hassan-Ijaiye, alongside several other political actors including Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Lanre Sanusi, and Ayodele Adewale.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is also being discussed as a potential contender, possibly representing Lagos West in a broader balancing equation.
Political observers note that beyond zoning, several critical factors will influence the final selection process. These include religious considerations, generational shifts within the party, and ongoing debates about indigenous representation in Lagos politics.
As consultations deepen and alignments continue to evolve, the Lagos APC governorship race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in Nigeria’s lead-up to 2027.
While it remains early in the process, the emergence of high-profile names signals a competitive and strategic battle ahead—one that could redefine political leadership in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
