In a bold statement that has ignited national attention, Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately check what he describes as the “unchecked and dangerous influence” of his son, Seyi Tinubu. Atiku, through his media aide Paul Ibe, expressed grave concern over serious allegations raised by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Isah, which include claims of physical assault, abduction, and attempted bribery—allegedly orchestrated by Seyi Tinubu.

Atiku’s statement, released on Friday, described the situation as a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic values and civil liberties. The former Vice President emphasized that the accusations are not only deeply troubling due to their content, but also because they implicate a member of the President’s own family, amplifying the seriousness of the matter.

“Allegations Against Seyi Strike at the Core of Democratic Integrity,” Says Atiku

In his sharply worded message, Atiku called the incident “disturbing and dangerous,” especially considering what might have happened if the alleged assault had resulted in fatal consequences. He argued that such an outcome would have been indistinguishable from the many acts of violence routinely committed by criminal networks across the country. However, the implication that a presidential family member could be involved takes the issue to an unprecedented level.

The statement warned of an increasingly blurred line between state authority and personal power, particularly pointing to allegations that even senior security officials may be under the sway of Seyi Tinubu. If true, Atiku stated, this would signify a dangerous compromise of state institutions and a complete failure of governance structures meant to protect Nigerian citizens impartially.

“It is intolerable that the first family would seek to subjugate the NANS — or any civil society group — through threats, bribes, or brute force,” Atiku said. “Nigeria is a democratic republic, not a monarchy handed down to one family.”

He called on civil society organizations, student bodies, political leaders, and everyday Nigerians to reject such tactics and defend democratic space against what he termed “the rabid drive to consolidate political power through manipulation and fear.”

Calls for Independent Investigation and Protection for Whistleblower

Atiku also addressed accusations being circulated that suggest he is politically aligned with Comrade Isah in an attempt to malign the Tinubu administration. He refuted these claims as “baseless, malicious, and desperate,” insisting that his interaction with Isah had been purely in the context of advocating for education reform and the welfare of Nigerian students—consistent with his personal and professional commitments, including his founding of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) and AUN Academy.

He stressed that Comrade Isah’s allegations must be taken seriously and investigated independently, particularly because the security agencies that should be carrying out such inquiries might themselves be compromised or under political pressure. The call for an impartial inquiry is rooted in the broader concern for democratic accountability and the safety of those who speak out against abuse of power.

“We issue a clear warning: nothing must happen to this young man,” the statement cautioned. “Any harm to him will not go unnoticed or unchallenged. Nigerians deserve truth, accountability, and a leadership that respects the rule of law—not a regime that weaponizes power to silence dissent.”

Atiku’s remarks underscore a growing national anxiety around the misuse of power, the intimidation of activists, and the creeping erosion of democratic norms. As these claims reverberate across political circles and civil society, the pressure is mounting on President Tinubu to publicly address the allegations and ensure that any wrongdoing—regardless of who is involved—is met with appropriate justice.

The Nigerian public now waits to see whether the Presidency will respond with clarity and action or further deepen the perception of impunity within the country’s corridors of power.
