The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line after strong winds and heavy rainfall caused the collapse of a major transmission tower.
TCN disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following a fault that disrupted bulk electricity transmission along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor.

According to the company, the 330kV transmission line tripped at approximately 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, following the severe weather conditions in the area.
TCN said an attempt was made to restore the line at about 11:07 p.m., but the line tripped again.
Following the second trip, the company dispatched linesmen from its Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to inspect the transmission corridor and determine the cause of the disruption.
The inspection team subsequently discovered that Tower T367 had collapsed.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the collapse of the tower was caused by heavy winds and rainstorms experienced in the area,” TCN said.
TCN Begins Emergency Repairs
The collapsed tower has disrupted the transmission of bulk electricity through the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor, identified as 2KNJ-BRK1.
TCN consequently declared force majeure on the affected line, citing the severe weather event that caused the damage.
The company said it had commenced mobilisation efforts to move personnel, equipment and other materials to the affected location to reconstruct the collapsed tower and restore normal transmission.
Alternative Route Maintains Power Supply to Sokoto
Despite the damage, TCN said it had been able to maintain electricity transmission to Sokoto through an alternative transmission route.
The company explained that the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor was receiving electricity through the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau transmission line.
According to TCN, the alternative arrangement is helping to maintain electricity supply to affected areas while repair operations are being organised.
The transmission company apologised to electricity consumers and other stakeholders for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
TCN assured the public that it was working to restore normal bulk electricity transmission along the affected corridor as quickly as possible.
