Effurun, Delta State – A 28-year-old man identified as Mene Ogidi (also referred to as Ogidi Mena or Oghenemine Million Ogidi) was shot dead by a police officer on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. FRCN Staff Decry Unrefunded
According to official police accounts and eyewitness reports, Ogidi had gone to the park to waybill a parcel sent by a friend. Members of the transport union became suspicious of the parcel’s weight, forced it open, and discovered a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. The union members apprehended Ogidi, tied his hands, and alerted the police. Operatives from the Effurun Area Command were deployed to the scene to take him into custody.
A viral video that circulated widely on social media shows the suspect on the ground near a police vehicle, visibly restrained and pleading with the officers. In the footage, Ogidi is heard begging, saying words to the effect of “Officer, I beg, I will tell you everything… I don’t know anything… please” and offering to lead them somewhere. Despite his pleas and restrained state, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman (also known locally as “Ogbegbe”), discharged his firearm at close range, resulting in Ogidi’s death. Some activist accounts claim he was first shot in the hand or leg at the park before being taken toward Ekpan Police Station area, where the fatal shot(s) occurred.

The Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State Police Command have strongly condemned the incident as an extrajudicial killing and a clear violation of Force Order 237 on the use of firearms and the Force’s Standard Operating Procedures. Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, described the act as unacceptable and extended condolences to Ogidi’s family.
Officer Arrested and TransferredFollowing the incident, ASP Nuhu Usman was immediately arrested on the directive of the Commissioner of Police. He was first taken to the Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba and has since been transferred, along with members of his team, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. There, he is expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary action and possible criminal prosecution. The Force Public Relations Officer has assured the public and the bereaved family that justice will be served without compromise.
Some reports from activists, including Harrison Gwamnishu, suggest that ASP Usman, a former member of the now-defunct SARS unit or Rapid Response Squad (RRS), had prior allegations of brutality against him. These claims remain under investigation as part of the ongoing probe.Public Reaction and Calls for JusticeThe circulation of the graphic video has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with many drawing parallels to past cases of police brutality and renewing calls for systemic reform in the Nigeria Police Force.
