In a weekend marked by destructive weather events, residents across Ekiti and Kwara States were left counting their losses following a series of violent rainstorms that swept through multiple communities. While there were no reported fatalities in most affected areas, the storms caused significant damage to properties, public infrastructure, and critical facilities.

The governments of both states have quickly moved to assess the damage and offer relief to affected citizens.

Rainstorm Destruction Sparks Swift Response from Ekiti Governor

The focus keyword here is “Rainstorm,” highlighting the severe weather events that triggered urgent government intervention.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, extended his sympathy to residents affected by the rainstorm that struck on Saturday. The storm, which raged for several hours, damaged both private residences and public assets across various communities.

In a statement released by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, it was confirmed that no lives were lost despite the extent of the destruction. Governor Oyebanji expressed deep concern over the incident and immediately directed the State Emergency Management Agency to begin a comprehensive assessment of the damages.

“We are in this together,” the governor assured residents. He encouraged calm among the populace, emphasizing that the state government was committed to supporting victims and ensuring the swift restoration of affected areas.

“The administration is committed to the welfare and well-being of the people of the state and will not leave any stone unturned in providing timely support to the victims of the rainstorm,” he said.

NYSC Camp in Kwara State Severely Hit by Rainstorm

Meanwhile, in Kwara State, a similar disaster struck the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area, causing widespread damage to camp facilities.

The Kwara State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa, described the rainstorm as a “very devastating” natural phenomenon. He confirmed that although infrastructure was severely affected, there were no casualties among corps members or staff.

“The storm destroyed the roof of the Administrative Block, partially damaged the multipurpose hall, and affected the camp mosque, market, and several hostel blocks,” Onifade stated. Two vehicles belonging to camp officials were also crushed when an uprooted tree fell due to strong winds.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Youth Development, Shehu Ndanusa-Usman, alongside traditional ruler Etsu Tsaraji, HRH Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi, visited the camp to assess the damage and offer words of encouragement to the NYSC community.

Onifade emphasized the importance of safety, saying, “The most important thing is that no lives were lost. We are grateful for the safety of all corps members and staff, and they are well accommodated despite the destruction.”

Northern Kwara Communities Suffer Heavier Toll

In addition to the damage at the NYSC camp, other parts of Kwara State, particularly in Ilesha Baruba and surrounding Baruten Local Government Area, were also severely affected by rainstorms on Friday night.

Tragically, one person was confirmed dead in Ilesha Baruba due to injuries sustained during the storm, while several others suffered injuries from falling walls and dislodged roofing materials. Significant property damage was reported, with homes, warehouses, and food stores destroyed across the region.

The Emir of Ilesha Baruba, Prof. Halidu Abubakar, expressed profound concern over the scale of devastation, calling for immediate government intervention to help restore affected communities.

“Some victims were severely affected, with one confirmed dead and several others injured,” the Emir stated. “The storm blew off rooftops, destroyed foodstuffs, and left many families in urgent need of shelter.”

Local residents echoed the Emir’s call for swift support. Victims like Alhaji Ibrahim Mora and Mallam Abdullahi Ibrahim recounted harrowing experiences of losing their homes and possessions to the storm.

“We need prompt government intervention to restore our homes and livelihoods,” said Mora. “The damage is extensive, and many victims are forced to seek shelter with neighbours while awaiting help.”

The devastating rainstorms across Ekiti and Kwara States this past weekend have left a trail of destruction and human suffering. While the absence of mass casualties provides some relief, the extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure, and key facilities underscores the urgent need for robust disaster response and mitigation strategies.

As state authorities and community leaders work to assess and respond to the immediate needs of victims, the situation highlights the broader challenge of strengthening Nigeria’s infrastructure against increasingly volatile weather patterns.
