The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has asserted that internal crises within political parties should not be viewed as destructive but rather as catalysts for growth and institutional strengthening.
Speaking during a televised interview on Arise Television, Gabam emphasized that no major political organization is immune to disagreements. According to him, such internal wrangles are not only inevitable but essential in shaping a party’s resilience and direction.

He argued that crises help clarify individual roles within a party and expose the genuine intentions of its members. “Every strong political party experiences internal disagreements. These moments, rather than weakening the structure, often contribute to its long-term stability,” he noted.

Gabam’s remarks come amid lingering leadership disputes within the SDP, which have drawn public attention and sparked concerns about the party’s readiness for future elections. However, he dismissed fears of fragmentation, insisting that the majority of party members remain committed to unity and progress.
He acknowledged that dissatisfaction is a constant feature in political systems, with some individuals persistently expressing discontent. Despite this, he maintained that the party’s core leadership and supporters are focused on repositioning the SDP for upcoming electoral challenges.
Addressing allegations made by former SDP National Chairman, Shehu Umar Abubakar, Gabam firmly rejected claims questioning the legitimacy of his leadership. He clarified that court rulings had already settled the matter, invalidating opposing claims.
According to Gabam, the appellate court overturned an earlier judgment delivered by Justice Nwite, citing lack of jurisdiction and legal inconsistencies. As a result, he said, any decisions or communications issued under the rival leadership were rendered null and void.
Gabam also took the opportunity to defend the judiciary, a sector often criticized in Nigeria’s political discourse. He described the appellate court’s ruling as detailed and well-reasoned, urging observers to recognize instances where the legal system demonstrates competence and fairness.
Furthermore, he explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognized his leadership based on the appellate court’s decision. This, he said, reinforces the legitimacy of his position and underscores the importance of legal processes in resolving political disputes.
Beyond internal party issues, Gabam called on politicians across Nigeria to reduce hostility and bitterness in the political environment. He warned that unchecked tensions could destabilize the country’s democratic system, urging leaders to prioritize national stability over personal ambitions.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Gabam admitted that the SDP’s internal crisis has had some impact on its organisational capacity. He revealed that the party is currently streamlining its programmes to meet urgent political demands and rebuild its strength.
However, he stressed that the challenges facing the SDP are not unique. He pointed to provisions in the amended Electoral Act, which he said have created operational pressures for all political parties, including those in power.
Despite these hurdles, Gabam remains optimistic that the SDP can emerge stronger, reiterating his belief that crises, when properly managed, serve as defining moments that ultimately reinforce political institutions.
