Emerging Opposition Coalition Threatens Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

El-Rufai’s Defection Sparks Political Realignments Ahead of 2027

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 presidential election, political forces are reportedly aligning against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, fueling speculations of a formidable opposition coalition in the making.

At the center of this movement is former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, whose recent defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has intensified political tensions. According to sources, El-Rufai’s move is part of a broader strategy to mobilize discontented APC members into a strong opposition force, using the SDP as a unifying platform.

INEC Begins Planning For 2027 Elections With New Strategic Framework

Political Heavyweights in Talks to Challenge APC

Investigations reveal that El-Rufai has begun discussions with key political figures, including former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and ex-APC National Chairmen, Abdullahi Adamu and John Odigie-Oyegun. While Adamu and Oyegun were never members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), insiders suggest that there are ongoing efforts to rally CPC loyalists still within the APC to defect en masse to the SDP.

Although it remains unclear whether former President Muhammadu Buhari, who originally led CPC into the APC merger ahead of the 2015 elections, is directly involved, some sources suggest he may be subtly supporting the strategy to weaken APC’s grip on the North.

“This is exactly how Jonathan was removed in 2015. The first moves were made in 2012, three years before the election. What is happening now is following a similar script,” a political source revealed.

El-Rufai’s Influence in the North Under Scrutiny

Despite the buzz surrounding his defection, political analysts remain divided on whether El-Rufai can successfully position himself as the primary opposition figure in the North. His vocal criticism of the Tinubu administration has gained him attention, but some observers believe his influence is not strong enough to significantly disrupt the APC’s dominance.

A northern political leader, while acknowledging El-Rufai’s growing popularity, expressed doubts about his ability to sustain the momentum.

“You know how Nigerians are—we are quick to support anyone who speaks against the government. El-Rufai is playing the victim very well. But if Tinubu’s handlers are serious, they can checkmate him easily, even in the North,” the source stated.

Potential Impact on 2027 Elections

With El-Rufai leading efforts to consolidate opposition forces, the political landscape ahead of 2027 is becoming increasingly complex. If the SDP successfully attracts key APC defectors and secures backing from influential northern politicians, Tinubu could face one of the toughest re-election battles in Nigeria’s recent history.

While the APC remains the dominant force in Nigerian politics, the emergence of a well-coordinated opposition could shift electoral dynamics, much like the alliance that unseated former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

As political maneuvering continues, all eyes will be on how Tinubu’s camp responds to the growing threat from within and outside the APC.
