Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that political intimidation and federal influence will not determine the outcome of the 2027 elections in Oyo State, insisting that the people of the state are ready to defend their democratic rights at the polls.
Makinde made the statement during the 2026 Oyo State International Tourism Summit held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan. The governor used the occasion to stress the importance of continuity, competence, and citizen participation in sustaining development across the state.
According to him, Nigerians are becoming more politically aware and are no longer willing to remain passive observers during elections. He noted that attempts to impose leaders through intimidation or external political pressure would face strong resistance from voters.

The governor referenced previous political experiences in other states, including Ekiti State, while expressing confidence that the political atmosphere in 2027 would be different.
Makinde stated that citizens are increasingly determined to protect their votes and actively participate in shaping leadership outcomes. He emphasized that elections should reflect the will of the people rather than the influence of powerful political actors.

The governor also warned voters to carefully evaluate candidates ahead of the next election cycle. According to him, leadership mistakes can have long-lasting consequences on governance and development.
Makinde explained that while he can recommend individuals to the people of Oyo State, the final decision rests with the electorate. He stressed that electing leaders without the required competence could negatively affect the state for an entire four-year tenure.
The governor further cautioned against political activities capable of destabilizing his administration before the completion of his tenure on May 29, 2027. He reminded political stakeholders that his government remains fully in charge of the state until the end of its constitutional mandate.
As discussions about succession continue to gain momentum in Oyo politics, Makinde insisted that his administration would not tolerate distractions or internal sabotage capable of slowing governance.
The governor also addressed criticism surrounding his political mentorship style and appointments within government. Some critics had questioned why certain individuals associated with the opposition All Progressives Congress were being considered for strategic roles.
Responding to the concerns, Makinde said his administration prioritizes competence, loyalty to Oyo State, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to development rather than party affiliation.
He mentioned names such as Bimbo Adekanmbi and Morounkola Thomas while defending his inclusive governance style. According to him, anyone from Oyo State with the necessary capacity and commitment to the state’s progress remains eligible to contribute to governance.
Makinde maintained that development can only thrive when governments are willing to work with capable individuals across political divides.
The governor also reiterated his ambition to transform Oyo into the tourism capital of South-West Nigeria. He highlighted ongoing infrastructural projects, especially within the Oke-Ogun axis, as part of efforts to boost tourism and attract investment opportunities.
He revealed that participants at the tourism summit recently toured several parts of the region and expressed optimism about its future economic potential.
Makinde additionally praised the road infrastructure developed under his administration, boasting that motorists can now travel across several major routes in the state without encountering potholes.
According to him, commuters can drive from Moniya to Iseyin, Ogbomoso, and Oyo on state roads with improved ease and comfort, reflecting the administration’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and economic growth.
