The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, disclosed the development, saying the initiative is aimed at extending telecommunications infrastructure to communities that remain poorly served or disconnected from reliable mobile and internet services.
The planned towers are expected to improve access to digital services in rural areas, where inadequate telecommunications infrastructure has continued to limit opportunities in education, healthcare, financial services, e-commerce and other aspects of the digital economy.
The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to expand Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and ensure that more citizens can participate in the country’s growing digital economy. By targeting rural communities, the programme is expected to address some of the infrastructure gaps that have contributed to unequal access to connectivity.
The deployment of the 3,700 towers could also improve communication links between underserved communities and the wider Nigerian economy, while strengthening access to global digital platforms. Further details on the locations, implementation timeline and funding arrangements are expected as the Federal Government advances the project.
