The Federal Government has announced that kidnappers, bandits and other armed groups attacking communities across the country will henceforth be officially classified and treated as terrorists.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during his end-of-year press briefing held on Monday in Abuja. According to the minister, the government has decided to end what it described as “ambiguous nomenclature” in addressing insecurity in Nigeria.

Idris said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is adopting a firmer and clearer security posture, stressing that crimes such as banditry and kidnapping are acts of terrorism that must be confronted with the full weight of the law. He noted that the reclassification reflects the devastating impact of such crimes on lives, livelihoods and national stability.

The minister warned that the government would no longer tolerate insecurity under any guise, adding that any individual or group that terrorises Nigerians, regardless of how they are labeled, will be dealt with as terrorists. He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.
