A civic group under the banner of Save Oyo Movement (SOM) has raised serious allegations against Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of mismanaging public funds in connection with a recent political event in Ibadan.
The group claimed that the governor spent over ₦2 billion on an opposition parties summit held in the state capital, describing the expenditure as wasteful and unjustifiable. The allegation was contained in a statement released on Sunday and signed by the group’s coordinator, Akeem Oladiti.

According to SOM, the alleged spending forms part of a broader pattern in which the governor has reportedly diverted funds originally intended for victims of the January 2024 Ibadan explosion. The group alleged that out of the ₦30 billion relief fund received from the federal government, more than ₦10 billion has been spent on political activities tied to Makinde’s rumored ambition to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

The group further accused the governor of previously allocating ₦5 billion to host the Peoples Democratic Party National Convention in November 2025, an event they described as unsuccessful. Additionally, SOM alleged that ₦1.5 billion was spent on a controversial coronation ceremony involving Ibadan high chiefs, which reportedly failed to proceed as planned due to a boycott by key figures.
In its statement, SOM also referenced Sharafadeen Alli, suggesting that the coronation event had political undertones linked to the state’s future governorship race. The group argued that such expenditures reflect misplaced priorities, especially given the pressing needs of citizens affected by the explosion disaster.
Calling for accountability, SOM announced plans to petition both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to investigate the governor’s financial decisions.
The group questioned why funds designated as a lifeline for disaster victims would allegedly be redirected toward political ambitions. “While we do not oppose anyone pursuing political aspirations, it must not come at the expense of the welfare of the people,” the statement read.
SOM emphasized that it would continue to push for transparency and ensure that public funds are used appropriately. The group insisted that Governor Makinde must provide a clear account of how the relief funds have been utilized since their disbursement.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from the Oyo State government regarding these allegations. However, the claims are likely to intensify public scrutiny and could prompt formal investigations if petitions are filed and accepted by the relevant anti-corruption agencies.
The situation adds a new layer of political tension in Oyo State, as stakeholders and citizens await further clarification on the matter.
