MUNICH, GERMANY — Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has admitted that winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or is beyond his control despite another remarkable individual season with the German champions.

The England captain has scored 73 goals for Bayern Munich and is regarded as one of the leading contenders for this year’s prestigious individual award. Several bookmakers have also listed the prolific striker as one of the favourites following his outstanding campaign.

Speaking to reporters in Germany on Monday, August 17, Kane acknowledged the significance of the award but said the final decision rests with the voters.

“It’s the biggest award you can get. The Ballon d’Or isn’t in my hands,” Kane said.

“I’ve done what I could in terms of performing. Of course, it would be fantastic if it happens. But ultimately, there’s still two or three months until a decision is made.”

Kane enhanced his credentials by helping Bayern secure a Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2025/26 campaign. He also finished the league season with 36 goals, earning the European Golden Shoe as the continent’s leading scorer.

However, his Ballon d’Or hopes could be affected by Bayern’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, as well as England’s World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.

Beyond the Ballon d’Or race, Kane has also opened the door to extending his stay at Bayern Munich beyond next summer. The 33-year-old joined the Bundesliga giants from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 and has since established himself as one of the club’s most prolific forwards.

Kane has scored an extraordinary 146 goals in 147 appearances for Bayern since his arrival.

With only one year remaining on his current contract, the England international indicated that discussions over his future could begin soon.

“I only have one year left on my contract, so now is the time to talk about it,” Kane said.

Kane has yet to feature for Bayern in pre-season following his involvement in the 2026 World Cup. Bayern will officially begin their 2026/27 campaign against Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on Saturday, August 22.
