Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that the country’s security challenges will eventually be overcome, while calling on citizens to support the reforms being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akpabio made the remarks while discussing the relationship between national security, economic development and the cooperation required between citizens and security agencies.

The Senate President described insecurity as a major obstacle to development, arguing that businesses and investments cannot thrive in an environment where people and economic activities are exposed to persistent security threats.

According to him, the government’s security strategy has increasingly focused on taking the fight directly to criminal groups rather than waiting for attacks to occur before responding.

Akpabio said the change in approach was part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to confront criminals, bandits and insurgents in areas where they operate.

 Akpabio Says Insecurity Will Be Defeated

“The security forces are taking the fight directly to the enclaves of criminals, bandits, and insurgents,” Akpabio said.

He added that the strategy had shifted from a reactive approach to what he described as proactive confrontation, assuring Nigerians that insecurity would eventually be defeated.

The Senate President, however, stressed that security operations cannot succeed through military hardware and personnel alone.

He urged residents and communities across the country to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could assist authorities in preventing attacks and identifying criminal activities.

“Security is a collective civic responsibility,” he said, adding that security personnel working on the frontlines depend on actionable intelligence from the communities they protect.

Akpabio’s comments place emphasis on community intelligence as an important component of efforts to tackle criminality, particularly in areas where residents may have information about suspicious movements or activities.

Beyond security, the Senate President also highlighted developments in Nigeria’s financial sector, linking banking reforms and recapitalisation efforts to the broader economic programme of the Tinubu administration.

He said Nigeria’s banking industry had become stronger and more resilient as a result of reforms, including the ongoing recapitalisation programme.

Akpabio attributed the changes to what he described as the “bold vision and strategic foresight” of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the Senate President, the banking sector has moved away from periods when bank failures could leave depositors facing significant uncertainty over their funds.

He described the industry as increasingly safe, resilient and technologically advanced, while pointing to recapitalisation as evidence of continuing changes within the financial sector.

Akpabio also argued that economic reforms and security improvements are interconnected because businesses require stability and confidence to operate successfully.

“No foreign investor will build in an atmosphere of chaos, and no local business can thrive without safety,” he said.

His comments came as he urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the administration’s reform agenda while also playing an active role in addressing security challenges.

The Senate President’s appeal for public cooperation reflects the view that tackling insecurity requires participation beyond government agencies, with communities expected to provide information that can support law-enforcement and military operations.

At the same time, his assurances about the eventual defeat of insecurity represent his stated confidence in the direction of ongoing security operations.

Akpabio maintained that with security agencies taking a more proactive approach and citizens providing useful intelligence, efforts to restore security could be strengthened.

He also presented the banking sector’s ongoing reforms as part of the wider economic changes taking place under the current administration.
