Lagos State Reaffirms Support for Civil Servants Beyond Retirement

The Lagos State Government has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of civil servants, reassuring retirees of continued support, empowerment, and meaningful engagement beyond their active service years. During an interactive session held on Tuesday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, top government officials emphasized that retirement marks not an end, but the beginning of a new, fulfilling phase of life.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, stressed the administration’s dedication to providing retirees with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive after leaving government service. According to him, the government remains fully invested in offering affordable housing schemes, health insurance plans, cooperative societies, and reintegration training programmes to ease the transition into retirement.
“Retirement is not an end but a new beginning filled with opportunities,” Agoro said. He encouraged retirees to remain productive by venturing into entrepreneurship, offering consultancy services, and engaging in volunteer activities. His remarks sought to inspire optimism among the attendees and highlight the numerous ways in which retirees can continue to contribute meaningfully to society.

Guiding Retirees Toward New Opportunities
Also addressing the session, the Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, underscored the importance of equipping retirees with knowledge and skills that will help them remain self-reliant and active.
“This interaction will enable all retirees to know the areas they can venture into, even in retirement. It also presents an opportunity to unveil different plans already on the ground to help them unlock their potential,” Oyegbola explained.
She detailed various initiatives that the state government has introduced to ensure that retirees are not only financially stable but also psychologically and socially empowered. These include workshops on entrepreneurship, access to agricultural opportunities to promote food security, and mentorship programs to help them tap into their wealth of experience.
Commendation from Former Public Servants
Delivering the keynote address, former Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Government, Olajide Bashorun, applauded the state’s proactive approach to retirees’ welfare. He noted that the government’s commitment to both serving and retired civil servants sets a standard for other states to follow.
“I commend the Lagos State Government for its sustained efforts in the area of welfare,” Bashorun said. “Retirement should not be a time of despair but an era of rediscovery. I urge all retirees to stay engaged by identifying what they’re passionate about and putting their skills to use in retirement.”
Bashorun also stressed the importance of mental and physical health in retirement, urging retirees to maintain active lifestyles and explore hobbies that bring fulfillment.
Unlocking Retirees’ Potentials: A Strategic Initiative
The event, themed “Unlocking Retirees’ Potentials: Food Security and Entrepreneurship,” served not only as an interactive forum but also as a platform for showcasing opportunities available to retirees. Presentations were made on various initiatives, such as access to cooperative farming programs, small business grants, and advisory services aimed at supporting entrepreneurship among the retired populace.
The initiative reflects a broader vision championed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to ensure inclusivity and prosperity for all segments of the Lagos State workforce—both active and retired.
“This initiative reflects the vision of Mr. Governor and our commitment to ensure no one is left behind,” Agoro reiterated. “Support for Lagos State workers does not end at retirement—it continues as they step into a new and promising chapter of life.”
Building a Sustainable Post-Retirement Life
The Lagos State Government’s continuous focus on retirees’ welfare is part of a larger effort to build a resilient and inclusive society where every citizen has the opportunity to lead a dignified life. By investing in post-retirement programs and resources, the administration aims to prevent economic hardship among former public servants and foster a culture of lifelong productivity and contribution.
With a rapidly changing economic landscape and increasing life expectancy, the need for structured support for retirees has become more pressing. Lagos State’s model of proactive engagement, empowerment, and welfare assistance offers a template for holistic post-retirement care that other states across Nigeria could emulate.
In reaffirming its commitment, the Lagos State Government has sent a strong message: retirement is not a sunset, but a gateway to new beginnings—filled with hope, opportunities, and continued relevance.
