2026

As the 2026 governorship election in Osun State draws closer, political tensions are rising between opposition forces and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), in a recent statement, vowed to remove Governor Ademola Adeleke from office, accusing his administration of lacking vision and prioritizing personal interests over the collective development of the state.

The statement, issued by Dr Tosin Odeyemi, chairman of the NNPP in Osun, criticized Adeleke’s style of governance and called on all opposition parties to unite and present a credible candidate capable of steering Osun State towards progress and stability.

Battlelines Drawn: Leadership, Says NNPP

According to Odeyemi, Adeleke’s tenure has been riddled with directionless governance, lacking in strategic foresight and commitment to meaningful development. He said, “Osun deserves better than the present governor. We need a leader with vast knowledge about governance who can rise above political sentiments and truly serve the people.”

He also warned that failure to rally around a strong opposition candidate could jeopardize Osun’s future. “If political parties fail to align in purpose and present a qualified candidate, we may continue to experience poor governance, which will affect the prosperity of our dear state,” Odeyemi said.

The NNPP’s criticism has injected new energy into the political discourse in Osun, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested election.

PDP Claps Back: Adeleke’s Record Speaks for Itself

In a swift and pointed response, the Osun State PDP rejected Odeyemi’s remarks as politically motivated and devoid of facts. Through a statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, the PDP defended Governor Adeleke’s record, insisting that the NNPP chairman lacked the experience and political depth to make such criticisms.

Bamiji highlighted key achievements of Adeleke’s administration, asserting that the governor has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering impactful projects across the state.

“Adeleke’s administration has successfully completed over 200 kilometres of road construction, including the first-ever flyover in Ilé-Ifè. He has tackled Osogbo’s traffic congestion through the construction of a dual carriageway and initiated two additional flyovers,” the statement said.

The PDP also drew attention to the governor’s proactive efforts in human capital development, especially in the areas of welfare and health. “He cleared billions in salary arrears left behind by previous administrations and implemented a free health insurance scheme for pensioners and persons with disabilities,” Bamiji stated.

Healthcare, Infrastructure and Workers’ Welfare in Focus

Governor Adeleke’s defenders have particularly lauded his emphasis on grassroots healthcare. According to the PDP, his administration has rehabilitated and fully equipped over 200 health centres, ensuring that rural communities can access basic medical services with ease.

These achievements, the party said, were concrete evidence of Adeleke’s commitment to inclusive governance. “If Odeyemi cannot acknowledge these strides, it is clear he is blinded by political bitterness,” Bamiji added.

Beyond healthcare and infrastructure, Adeleke’s administration has prioritised workers’ welfare, gaining popularity among civil servants and retirees who had long been owed entitlements. This, according to many political observers, has helped solidify his base ahead of the 2026 contest.

2026: A Political Storm Brewing

The 2026 Osun governorship race is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested in recent memory. With the NNPP positioning itself as a viable alternative and calling for a unified front against the PDP, the political terrain is set for major shifts.

The PDP, on the other hand, appears confident that Adeleke’s track record will secure him another term. The party emphasised that despite mounting political pressure, Adeleke would remain focused on his development agenda.

“He is not distracted by political attacks. The governor remains committed to serving Osun people and improving their lives through sustainable projects and people-oriented policies,” Bamiji concluded.

The Road Ahead: Unity or Fragmentation?

For the NNPP and other opposition parties, the call for a united front could prove crucial. Historically, fragmented opposition efforts in Osun have weakened challengers and allowed dominant parties to maintain power. Whether these opposition groups can rise above political egos and consolidate remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s narrative is rooted in performance legitimacy. By showcasing Adeleke’s projects and pro-people policies, the ruling party aims to strengthen its connection with the electorate.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, Osun’s political landscape is poised for dynamic shifts. The outcome may well depend on whether voters are swayed more by the promise of “better leadership” or the proof of “delivered governance.”
