No Plans to Defect: Akwa Ibom Government Debunks Rumours About Governor Umo Eno

The Akwa Ibom State Government has officially dismissed growing speculation that Governor Umo Eno of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking in Uyo, the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, described the rumours as baseless and misleading, asserting that the Governor remains fully committed to the PDP.
The rumour mill began churning after Governor Eno publicly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio—both prominent figures in the APC. His endorsements, seen by some as signals of shifting political loyalty, have now been clarified by the state government as a strategic move rather than a partisan realignment.
Strategic Federal Engagement, Not Defection
According to Umanah, the governor’s gestures are rooted in a pragmatic approach to governance and development, not political opportunism. “Governor Umo Eno’s support for President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio is a strategic act of enlightened State interest,” Umanah said during a media briefing. “It is aimed at unlocking federal collaboration for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom.”
He emphasized that the Governor’s actions should be viewed through the lens of developmental cooperation. The objective, Umanah explained, is to foster a working relationship with federal authorities to attract vital infrastructure and policy support for the state, not to switch political allegiances.
Tangible Benefits Already Emerging from Collaboration
Umanah highlighted several key areas where this newfound federal collaboration is already yielding dividends for Akwa Ibom. Among them are high-impact projects such as the Ibom Deep Seaport—a critical economic infrastructure expected to boost trade and job creation—and ecological remediation efforts aimed at resolving long-standing environmental challenges.
“These are not mere political handshakes,” Umanah asserted. “They are strategic engagements with a view to fast-tracking the development agenda of Governor Umo Eno, which is firmly anchored on the Arise Agenda.”
He added that President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Akpabio have all publicly acknowledged and commended Governor Eno’s commitment to good governance and transformative leadership.
Performance Anchored on the Arise Agenda
Commissioner Umanah took the opportunity to praise the Governor’s performance since assuming office on May 29, 2023, describing it as “calculated and impactful.” He said the Governor’s developmental blueprint—known as the Arise Agenda—has been the foundation for consistent progress across multiple sectors in the state.
“We have seen substantial improvement in agriculture, rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and social welfare,” Umanah noted. “From day one, the Governor hit the ground running, focusing on both inherited and new projects.”
Among the achievements he outlined were extensive road construction projects, the establishment of well-equipped model schools, modern health centres in both rural and urban areas, and comprehensive citizen empowerment programs targeted at improving grassroots livelihoods.
Governor’s Relationship with Federal Leaders Based on Mutual Respect
Umanah also clarified that the Governor’s relationship with President Tinubu and Senator Akpabio is not driven by political calculations but rather by mutual respect and shared developmental interests. “These leaders have shown clear goodwill toward our State and have publicly acknowledged the Governor’s exceptional performance,” he stated. “This is leadership with foresight.”
He urged the public and political observers to focus less on partisan assumptions and more on the positive outcomes of intergovernmental collaboration. “Governor Eno is committed to the PDP and focused on delivering on his mandate to the people of Akwa Ibom,” Umanah concluded.
As political alliances continue to shift in Nigeria’s dynamic political environment, Akwa Ibom’s government appears determined to prioritize development and federal cooperation over partisan speculation.
