The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised Peter Obi, describing the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a “food is ready” politician who lacks the toughness required for national leadership.

Wike made the remarks on Monday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, where he spoke extensively about leadership, political endurance and Nigeria’s governance challenges.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the country requires leaders capable of confronting pressure, criticism and difficult decisions rather than politicians seeking an easy route to power.

“Peter Obi is like food is ready, ‘mama put’. I don’t want struggling in this country. There are challenges. You must have the capacity to face those challenges,” Wike stated.

Wike argued that true leadership is measured during periods of crisis and political turbulence, insisting that resilience and courage are essential qualities for anyone aspiring to lead Nigeria.

The minister referenced his own political battles within the Peoples Democratic Party, saying he resisted pressure to abandon the party despite internal disagreements and the influence of powerful political figures.

According to him, many governors and party stakeholders expected him to leave the PDP during periods of conflict, but he chose to remain and fight politically from within.

“I said I will not leave this party. They had money, yes, but it’s not money. I said I was not going to leave, rather you will leave,” he said.

Wike added that several of those who once opposed him eventually exited the party while he remained.

Reflects on Criticism as FCT Minister

The FCT minister also reflected on the intense criticism he received after accepting appointment into President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said he endured heavy attacks from political opponents and members of the public but remained focused on his duties rather than responding emotionally to criticism.

According to Wike, enduring pressure without backing down is what defines leadership.

“That’s what makes you a leader. That’s what makes you a man. Leadership is not bashing you. That’s not leadership,” he added.

Wike’s latest comments add to the growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general elections, as alliances, rivalries and party realignments continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape.

Peter Obi, who emerged as one of the major opposition figures after the 2023 presidential election, has maintained a strong support base, especially among young voters and urban communities.

Wike, meanwhile, remains one of the most influential political figures within the ruling establishment despite his long association with the opposition PDP.

Political observers believe the public exchanges between major political actors could intensify as preparations for the next election cycle gather momentum across the country.
