Obasa, Meranda To Resign As Lagos Assembly Reconvenes
There are compelling signs that the incumbent Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, and the outgoing Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, may both resign this week.
According to reports, their departure is a result of a decision made at a recent meeting of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to make room for a new Speaker from Lagos West, who is expected to be introduced on Wednesday.
After 32 of 40 MPs ousted Obasa on January 13, 2025, the Assembly has been enmeshed in a leadership crisis for weeks. The same MPs promptly elected Meranda Speaker. Obasa, however, contested his dismissal in court, claiming that due process had not been adhered to.
When Obasa, backed by strong security, invaded the Assembly on February 27 and called a contentious plenary session with just four lawmakers, demanding he remained Speaker, the crisis took a sharp turn. The case was postponed until March 7 for a hearing, and more than 35 politicians showed up before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja the next day.

With the GAC and party members siding with either Obasa or Meranda, the unrest has widened rifts within Lagos’ ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The Justice Forum and the Mandate Movement, the party’s two main factions, are now at odds more than ever as a result of the crisis.
Reconvening at the House March 3rd
On Monday, March 3, MPs will resume plenary amid the leadership turmoil. Legislative personnel were instructed to report for duty when regular business resumed in a message delivered by the Acting Clerk of the House on Sunday night.
“Good evening, distinguished colleagues,” the telegram said. The Acting Clerk has instructed me to notify everyone that tomorrow, Monday, March 3, 2025, is the day of the Plenary Session.
“All officers are asked to report for duty as usual when legislative work restarts in order to achieve this goal. Tell others, please. Thank you.
However, because of safety concerns brought on by the current leadership crisis, the House earlier Sunday ordered all legislative aides and staff to work remotely until further notice.
“To this end, all categories of staff at the Assembly, LAHASCOM, and legislative aides are requested to work remotely from home until further notice,” read the memo sent by Acting Clerk Babatunde Abubakar.
Given the ongoing high levels of tension in the Assembly, the action is intended to safeguard employees and avert possible violence.
