The Yoruba nation, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lukman Adeyemi, have reconciled longstanding differences and jointly established a new council dedicated to strengthening Yoruba cohesion. The landmark meeting, which took place in Lagos on Friday, drew prominent traditional rulers, cultural leaders, and political figures from across the South-West.Yoruba

The reconciliation, which many described as a “turning point in Yoruba history,” followed years of quiet tension between the two powerful thrones—Oyo and Ife—often considered the twin pillars of Yoruba civilization. Both monarchs, after a closed-door meeting that lasted over three hours at the Oriental Hotel, emerged together to announce the creation of the Yoruba Unity and Cultural Advancement Council (YUCAC), a new platform designed to harmonize traditional leadership and coordinate cultural development across the region.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Ooni of Ife emphasized that the unity of Yoruba traditional institutions was long overdue and that both palaces were now committed to speaking with one voice. “The Yoruba people are a proud and ancient race with deep wisdom, courage, and innovation. What we need now is unity of purpose. I have come here to embrace my brother, the Alaafin, and to declare that Ife and Oyo will work hand in hand for the progress of all Yoruba sons and daughters,” Ooni Ogunwusi said.

He noted that the new council would serve as a platform for promoting cultural exchange, conflict resolution, and regional collaboration among Yoruba-speaking communities in Nigeria and the diaspora. According to him, the council will engage with state governments, academic institutions, and cultural organizations to develop programmes focused on youth empowerment, tourism, and cultural preservation.

In his remarks, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lukman Adeyemi, reaffirmed his commitment to the unity initiative, describing it as “a new dawn” for the Yoruba people. “Our forefathers built great civilizations through cooperation and mutual respect. The misunderstandings of the past will no longer divide us. We are united by culture, language, and destiny. This council will serve as a symbol of that unity,” he said.

The Alaafin further announced that the YUCAC would convene an annual Yoruba Cultural Congress where traditional rulers, scholars, and stakeholders would deliberate on issues affecting the socio-political and cultural development of the Yoruba nation. The first congress is expected to hold in Ibadan early next year.

Prominent traditional rulers who witnessed the reconciliation included the Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Adetona; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi. They hailed the meeting as a “monumental step toward healing and rebuilding trust” among Yoruba monarchs.

Oba Adetona, speaking on behalf of the council of Yoruba Obas, praised both the Ooni and the Alaafin for their maturity and foresight, adding that disunity among the Yoruba royal families had long hindered the region’s political and cultural influence. “Today, history has been made. The Yoruba are stronger when united. The cooperation between Oyo and Ife will inspire our people and restore confidence in our traditional institutions,” he said.

Observers believe the rapprochement between the two monarchs could also have political significance. For decades, rivalry between Yoruba royal houses had occasionally influenced political alignments in the region. Analysts say the creation of a joint cultural council could serve as a stabilizing force that promotes unity ahead of upcoming regional and national events.

Cultural historian Professor Akin Alade, who attended the Lagos meeting, described the development as “a profound moment for Yoruba identity.” He said the unity initiative could help reposition Yoruba culture globally, especially in light of increasing interest in African heritage. “This is not just about two kings reconciling; it is about redefining leadership for a new generation of Yoruba people who seek strength in unity,” he said.

The Yoruba Unity and Cultural Advancement Council will reportedly consist of a 21-member board, including representatives from traditional councils, academia, youth groups, and diaspora communities. It will operate from offices in both Ile-Ife and Oyo, with the Ooni and Alaafin serving as co-chairmen.

At the close of the meeting, both monarchs performed symbolic cultural rites, exchanging traditional gifts and prayers as a gesture of peace. The event ended with a joint declaration titled the Lagos Unity Accord, affirming their shared vision for “a united, prosperous, and culturally vibrant Yoruba nation.”

As the drums and chants of praise filled the air, many in attendance expressed optimism that this reconciliation would usher in a new era of cooperation among Yoruba leaders. “This is history in motion,” said Chief Olabode Akinyemi, one of the attendees. “When the Ooni and Alaafin walk together, the entire Yoruba nation moves forward.”

With the establishment of the new council and the symbolic handshake of unity, the Yoruba people across Nigeria and the diaspora now look forward to a renewed cultural renaissance—anchored on harmony, shared heritage, and a collective vision for the future.
