Violence Erupts in Akure North as Farmers Are Targeted
Armed individuals, suspected to be herders, have reportedly launched deadly attacks on four farming communities in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The brutal assault, which occurred at midnight over the weekend, resulted in the deaths of more than 20 farmers, with several others still unaccounted for.
According to local sources, the affected communities include Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun Camp, and Aba Alajido, all within the Ala Elefosan area. Reports indicate that the attackers, heavily armed, invaded the villages under the cover of darkness, indiscriminately opening fire on residents.

Residents Mourn as Bodies Are Recovered
Eyewitness accounts reveal that at least 14 bodies have been recovered so far, with search efforts ongoing for missing individuals. The Regent of Ademekun Camp, Adelowo Adekemisola, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, stating that the attackers entered through the border with Edo State, catching the farmers completely off guard.
“The situation is heartbreaking. Fourteen farmers have already been confirmed dead, and many others are still missing. The assailants struck in the middle of the night, leaving destruction in their wake,” Adekemisola lamented.
Residents of the affected areas now live in fear, with many abandoning their farms and homes to seek safety elsewhere. The attack has further heightened concerns over security in Nigeria’s agricultural regions, where farmers frequently face violent assaults.
Police Launch Manhunt for Killers
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic incident and assured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Speaking on the matter, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, stated that security forces have been deployed to the region to restore order and prevent further attacks.
“Our men, in collaboration with other security agencies, are working tirelessly to track down those responsible for this attack. We are also taking steps to strengthen security in farming areas to prevent a recurrence,” Odunlami said.
Despite the police response, as of the time of this report, the Ondo State Government had not issued any official statement regarding the incident. This silence has sparked concerns among residents, who are calling for urgent government intervention to address the rising violence against farmers.
A Growing Threat to Nigeria’s Food Security
This latest attack in Ondo State is part of a troubling pattern of violence targeting farmers across Nigeria. Similar assaults have been recorded in various parts of the country, particularly in the northern regions, where armed groups frequently invade farming communities, leaving destruction and death in their wake.
In January, a similar attack took place in Borno State, where armed men rounded up farmers in Dumba, near Lake Chad, and opened fire, killing several people. The continued insecurity has raised alarms among agricultural experts, who warn that these attacks could significantly worsen Nigeria’s food crisis.
With the country already facing rising inflation and severe food shortages, the persistent targeting of farmers threatens to deepen economic hardships for millions of Nigerians. Experts urge the government to take decisive action to protect agricultural communities, emphasizing that food security is crucial for national stability.
As families in Ondo mourn their lost loved ones, the demand for justice and stronger security measures grows louder. Whether the authorities will respond effectively to this crisis remains to be seen.
