In a significant move aimed at preserving party discipline and integrity, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to its governors and elected representatives who are allegedly backing the 2027 re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This declaration came during the party’s first National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held on Tuesday, following recent high-profile defections that have rattled the opposition camp.

Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, was unequivocal in his condemnation of these acts, describing them as outright betrayal. He emphasized that the party would no longer tolerate such anti-party conduct, and disciplinary measures against defaulters are imminent.

PDP Warns of Consequences as Party Unity Faces Test

The political tension within the PDP has escalated in the wake of reports that Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—both elected under the PDP banner—have been actively supporting President Tinubu’s re-election ambitions under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Their actions have drawn sharp criticism from the party leadership, with Damagum suggesting that these governors have effectively crossed ideological lines.

In response to the deepening internal crisis, the NWC gave its nod to several resolutions passed during the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan. Among them was the scheduling of a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, now set for May 27. This gathering is expected to define the strategic direction of the party as it navigates political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Damagum did not mince words in accusing the APC of deploying tactics of intimidation, coercion, and inducement to lure PDP members into its fold. According to him, these tactics may yield temporary victories but will ultimately backfire, as the electorate will remember such actions at the polls.

“They can coerce, cajole and intimidate our members into joining them. But Nigerians will show them the results of their actions,” he warned, calling the Tinubu administration “insensitive to the yearnings and feelings of the people.”

The PDP leader’s remarks underscore a broader sentiment within the opposition party—that the mass defections and perceived betrayals are not just internal political skirmishes but reflect a weakening democratic ethos under the current administration.

To further assert its authority and restructure its internal machinery, the PDP has dissolved all existing party structures in Delta State. This sweeping move comes after a series of defections that significantly depleted the party’s strength in the state. A South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee has now been assigned to manage party affairs in the interim.

Legal Action and Reclaiming Mandates

In an assertive legal maneuver, Damagum announced that the PDP’s National Legal Adviser has been instructed to take immediate legal steps to recover mandates held by members who have defected to other parties. This legal recourse is grounded in the Electoral Act, which provides that elected officials who defect from the party under whose platform they won their mandate must vacate their seats.

“As far as the Electoral Act says, whenever you leave, you must leave the chair that you have occupied,” Damagum stated. “The fortune of this party cannot be left in the hands of our adversaries.”

This legal strategy could potentially spark a wave of litigation across multiple tiers of government and serve as a cautionary measure to other members considering defection.

Damagum also issued a direct warning to all PDP members, urging them to remain loyal or be prepared to face the consequences. “This is not the time to sit on the fence or play both sides,” he asserted, reinforcing the party’s commitment to internal discipline and ideological clarity.

As Nigeria‘s political landscape evolves in the lead-up to 2027, the PDP is positioning itself for what it describes as a “defining moment” in the country’s democratic journey. The coming months will reveal whether the party can consolidate its ranks, resist further defections, and mount a credible challenge to the ruling APC.

With the NEC meeting now officially scheduled and disciplinary actions on the horizon, the PDP appears determined to turn the tide. For party loyalists, it is a call to rally; for defectors, a warning shot across the bow.
