Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has declared that he has no intention of serving as a running mate to any candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The former Anambra State governor made the statement while confirming his plan to contest for Nigeria’s top office in 2027, firmly positioning himself as a principal contender rather than a subordinate figure.
Obi made the declaration on Sunday night during an interactive session on 𝕏 Space, where he addressed supporters and discussed his political future. His remarks appeared aimed at dispelling speculation that he might agree to become a vice-presidential candidate within any emerging opposition alliance ahead of the next general election.

According to Obi, his years of experience in governance, business, and public service were not acquired to settle for a secondary role. He stressed that his political journey and personal investments in leadership development were focused squarely on becoming president.
“I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President,” Obi said. “I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President.”
He further affirmed his determination to contest, stating clearly that his name would appear on the ballot in 2027. “Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers,” he added, drawing enthusiastic reactions from supporters listening to the session.
Position on Presidency, Coalition Politics, and ADC Alliance
Beyond his personal ambition, Peter Obi also addressed ongoing conversations around opposition coalitions, particularly involving the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC). He revealed that members of the ADC coalition have agreed to work together collectively, dismissing claims that any individual would step down in his favour.
Obi clarified that he does not need to formally join the ADC, explaining that he has always been part of the coalition arrangement since its formation. His remarks appeared to counter narratives suggesting he was negotiating a fresh political entry or seeking special concessions within the group.
“I am not joining ADC. I can’t re-join what I am already a part of,” Obi said. “I’ve been part of the coalition from day one. Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC. We have all agreed to work together.”
His comments underline a broader strategy of collaboration rather than dominance, even as he maintains his firm presidential ambition. Observers note that this approach may be designed to keep opposition unity intact while avoiding internal rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections.
Peter Obi also took time to clarify his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, amid speculation of tension among leading opposition figures. He emphasised that he holds Atiku in high regard and would continue to show him respect despite differences in political strategy.
“Atiku remains my respected leader,” Obi said, signalling his intention to maintain cordial relations within the opposition space.
Political analysts say Obi’s statements mark a decisive moment in early 2027 election positioning. By ruling out a vice-presidential role, he has drawn a clear line about his aspirations and expectations, potentially reshaping alliance negotiations in the months ahead.
As Nigeria gradually moves toward another election cycle, Obi’s declaration is likely to intensify political calculations across party lines. Supporters view his confidence as a sign of consistency, while critics argue that coalition politics may still require compromise. Nevertheless, Obi’s message was unambiguous: his focus is firmly on the presidency, and he is preparing for a direct contest in 2027.
