Political intervention may soon end the protracted impasse between former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and thirty-two members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to President Bola Tinubu and the Assembly told BusinessDay that the President did not support Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025.
Following Obasa’s impeachment and the election of Mojisola Meranda as the first female Speaker of the House, the Lagos Assembly has been immersed in a leadership battle.
When Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS) agents locked down the Speaker’s office on Monday, the situation became more heated, and parliamentary staff protested.
Speaking on the crisis, the insider claimed, “They treated Baba with disrespect.” He was not taken with them. Baba wants Obasa back because he is upset that he was taken away.
Take a look at what Obasa is causing. There is division throughout the House, among the members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and in other places. No one is benefiting from this. Additionally, the Department of State Services’ (DSS) invasion of the Assembly was needless. While some members expressed disapproval of the DSS’s participation, the DSS responded that they were welcomed. The truth is unknown.
The source expressed concern that the development would have a negative effect on the Assembly’s and the executive arm’s operations.
“What is occurring could have a detrimental effect on Lagos State’s general government. The House, for example, has adjourned sine die. Will that not have an impact on the executive’s work? No society is ever good when it is in crisis. Development is impacted. Development will be halted in the absence of peace.
“Tinubu is the man who will ultimately find a solution. Ultimately, every member of the House of Assembly is a member of the same political family,” the insider stated.
