Suspended

Amid tight security and public scrutiny, suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, made a calm yet firm appearance at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama on Thursday. The senator is facing a three-count charge bordering on alleged criminal defamation, filed by the Federal Government through the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar.

She arrived in court at exactly 10:30 a.m., nearly 30 minutes before the scheduled court session, which was expected to commence by 11:00 a.m. Wearing a composed expression, Akpoti-Uduaghan quietly took her seat, joined by her legal team and political associates.

Defamation Drama Deepens as Arraignment Unfolds in Abuja

The case, marked CR/297/25, stems from allegations that the suspended senator made defamatory remarks about the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, during a live television interview.

In the controversial April 3, 2025 appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly accused both Akpabio and Bello of orchestrating a plot to assassinate her. “Let’s ask the Senate President why he withdrew my security if not to make me vulnerable to attacks?” she reportedly stated during the broadcast. She further alleged, “It was part of the meeting, the discussions that Akpabio had with Yahaya Bello that night, to eliminate me.”

The prosecution claims these comments were designed to injure the reputations of the high-ranking political figures, and insists that the senator acted with malicious intent and full knowledge of the consequences.

Adding to the gravity of the charges, the senator is also accused of making a deeply disturbing statement during a private telephone conversation with one Sandra C. Duru on March 27, 2025. In that conversation, she allegedly linked Senator Akpabio to the tragic death of Imoren Iniubong, claiming that the deceased’s organs were harvested and used to treat the Senate President’s ailing wife. “Her organs were actually used for the wife,” Akpoti-Uduaghan was quoted as saying.

The Federal Government contends that this statement, whether fact or fiction, poses serious implications for public trust, personal dignity, and national stability. The state plans to call at least six witnesses, including Akpabio, Bello, and four others, to establish the veracity of the allegations and the resultant damage to their reputations.

Heavy Security Presence as Public Divides Over Senator’s Trial

Outside the courtroom, the scene was as dramatic as the proceedings inside. Over 200 armed police officers swarmed the premises from the early hours of the morning, forming tight security barricades and scanning entrants thoroughly. Their presence underscored the high-stakes nature of the trial and the government’s intent to prevent any disturbances.

Despite the tension, supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan began gathering early, some waving banners and chanting in her favor. Among them was former Minister of Education and renowned human rights advocate, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, who arrived in solidarity, accompanied by a team of civic activists. “This is not just a legal matter; it’s a human rights issue,” she told reporters outside the courthouse.

Meanwhile, loyalists of ex-Governor Yahaya Bello also arrived en masse, creating a visibly charged atmosphere within and around the court complex. Both sides refrained from direct confrontation, but their presence added political weight to what many observers now view as a proxy battle between powerful factions within Nigeria’s ruling elite.

Also spotted in the courtroom was Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Roland Otaru, who is leading Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s defense team. With a reputation for navigating politically sensitive legal battles, Otaru is expected to mount a strong rebuttal against the prosecution’s claims.

Legal experts following the case suggest the trial could set a significant precedent in Nigeria’s jurisprudence concerning defamation and freedom of speech, especially when it involves public officials and controversial allegations.

A Battle Beyond the Courtroom

The arraignment comes just months after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from her duties under controversial circumstances. Many analysts believe the charges may not only be about defamation but also about political silencing and the cost of dissent in Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape.

“The message here is bigger than the courtroom,” said Abuja-based legal analyst, Ifeanyi Okonkwo. “It’s about drawing boundaries between protected speech and reputational harm in an increasingly polarized society.”

As proceedings continue, all eyes remain on the Maitama High Court. The next hearing will determine whether the court grants bail or remands the senator in custody, a decision that could influence the political temperature in both Kogi State and the National Assembly.

For now, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, flanked by her legal and moral allies, appears prepared to face what could be one of the most scrutinized legal battles in recent Nigerian political history.
