Tension has continued to mount across Nigeria’s political space following sharp criticism by the Labour Party (LP) over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to travel to Europe for a holiday amid worsening security challenges in the country. The opposition party described the trip as poorly timed and insensitive, coming at a moment when Nigerians are grappling with violent attacks, humanitarian crises, and alleged foreign military interference in parts of the North.

President Tinubu reportedly departed Lagos for Europe for an end-of-year break ahead of an official engagement in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is scheduled to attend the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, a global forum that brings together leaders from government, business, and civil society to promote sustainable development strategies.

The President’s media team has defended the trip, insisting it is both official and strategic. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that Tinubu’s participation at the summit was based on an invitation from the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to the statement, the summit provides an opportunity for Nigeria to engage global stakeholders on sustainability and economic development.

Despite this clarification, the Labour Party has strongly faulted the President’s decision to leave the country at such a critical time. LP’s acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, described the trip as lacking empathy for citizens facing daily threats to their lives and livelihoods.

 Tinubu’s Travel Sparks Opposition Outrage

Speaking in an interview through her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, Usman argued that the President should have remained in Nigeria to personally coordinate security responses. She insisted that the gravity of the current security situation requires the physical presence and direct leadership of the commander-in-chief.

According to Usman, violent attacks across several states, particularly in the North, point to a deepening crisis that should take precedence over international travel. She accused the federal government of downplaying the severity of the situation and warned that continued inaction could further erode public confidence in leadership.

“This is the most inauspicious time for the President to leave the country,” Usman said. “Even the Christmas holiday in Lagos seems ill-timed, given that a bomb exploded in Zamfara today, killing nine people. Nigerians are being attacked daily, and communities are living in fear.”

She further alleged that Nigeria is facing external aggression, describing recent developments as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. While details of the alleged foreign intervention remain unclear, the Labour Party maintained that the situation demands urgent and coordinated action at the highest level of government.

“Nigeria is under attack by a foreign nation. No matter how the government tries to frame this, it is a violation of our sovereignty. This is the time for the commander-in-chief to coordinate the response, not embark on a holiday,” she added.

The criticism comes amid growing public frustration over insecurity, as reports of bombings, kidnappings, and armed attacks continue to emerge from different parts of the country. Civil society groups and opposition figures have repeatedly called on the federal government to adopt a more decisive and transparent approach to national security.

Supporters of the President, however, argue that international engagements are part of governance and do not necessarily detract from security coordination at home. They maintain that relevant security agencies remain active and operational regardless of the President’s physical location.

As political tensions rise, the debate over Tinubu’s travel underscores broader concerns about leadership priorities, public trust, and the government’s ability to reassure citizens during times of national distress. With insecurity remaining a dominant issue, the Presidency may face increasing pressure to demonstrate stronger commitment and presence in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
