LAGOS — Digital financial services company OPay has dismissed a social media claim that it would suspend its operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026, describing the report as false and misleading.

The controversy began after an X user, Cute Hafserh, who operates the account @Haifah_Er_Abba, shared a post claiming that OPay would embark on an indefinite shutdown from September 1. The post circulated widely online before OPay responded and demanded its removal.

OPay, through its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, rejected the claim and warned that the company could take legal action over the publication. The fintech firm said the information was capable of misleading its customers and damaging its reputation.

Following the warning, Hafserh deleted the post and issued an apology to OPay. In a statement titled “Apology to @OPay_NG,” she explained that the information had already been circulating online for several days before she reposted it on her account.

“Earlier yesterday I shared a post on my 𝕏 page about OPay going on an indefinite break starting from 1st September 2026, which had been circulating for days before I shared it on my account.

“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information.”

Hafserh confirmed that she had taken down the publication and urged members of the public to disregard the shutdown report, stressing that OPay remains fully operational.

“I have taken down my post. @OPay_NG operations are normal, and there is no break or shutdown.

“I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and for reposting misleading information. Thank you for your understanding.”

The clarification puts to rest the social media claim that OPay would cease operations in Nigeria from September 1, with the company continuing its normal financial services.
