Fury’s Reluctance to Return Leaves Boxing Fans Uncertain

Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has thrown cold water on the possibility of a much-anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua, admitting that he is disinterested in returning to boxing. The 36-year-old fighter, who announced his retirement in January after suffering consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, stated bluntly that he “can’t be f***ed” with the sport, raising serious doubts about his future in the ring.

Despite growing speculation about his boxing status, Fury appears to be at peace with life outside the squared circle. His cousin and trainer, Andy Lee, reinforced this sentiment, revealing that Fury has been content and unbothered by the sport.

“(He’s) just the odd message here and there, and he seems very happy. (He said), ‘Andy, I’m not fd. I couldn’t be fd with it,’” Lee recounted, suggesting that the heavyweight star is genuinely enjoying retirement.

Speculation Mounts Despite Fury’s Retirement Stance

While Fury’s latest retirement announcement—his fifth so far—was met with skepticism by fans and industry insiders, his ranking by The Ring Magazine last month has only fueled further speculation. Surprisingly, the publication reinstated Fury as the number one contender in the heavyweight division, positioning him just behind unified champion Usyk, but ahead of IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois and the formidable Joseph Parker.

This unexpected ranking has revived conversations about a potential blockbuster return, with rumors swirling around a highly lucrative £200 million bout against Anthony Joshua. Many in the boxing community believe Fury’s retirement may not be permanent, given his history of stepping away only to return.

Saudi Boxing Promoter Hopes for Fury-Joshua Superfight

The idea of an all-British heavyweight showdown has long been discussed, and Saudi Arabia’s influential boxing promoter, Turki Alalshikh, is eager to make it happen. Alalshikh recently hinted that Fury could still be enticed back into the ring, revealing that he had spoken with the Gypsy King—not about boxing, but simply to check on his well-being.

“I want Tyson (next for Joshua). I spoke with him, but I didn’t talk about boxing. I just checked on his health and his family. I think maybe he’ll return. Yes, (I think he will return), I hope so,” Alalshikh stated in an interview with The Stomping Ground.

For now, Fury appears content with retirement, but with financial incentives and an unfinished rivalry with Joshua lingering, the boxing world remains unconvinced that he has truly hung up his gloves for good.
