Uber Technologies has announced plans to cut approximately 3,300 jobs worldwide, representing about 10 per cent of its global workforce, as the ride-hailing giant moves to streamline its organisational structure, reduce management layers and consolidate teams.

Chief Executive Officer, Dara Khosrowshahi, disclosed the restructuring in a message to employees on Wednesday, September 2, saying Uber’s rapid expansion over the past five years had created organisational complexity, including additional layers of management and fragmented responsibilities.

“But that growth has also brought complexity: more layers, more coordination, more fragmented ownership,” Khosrowshahi said.

Uber said affected employees had been notified, except in countries where local employment procedures require additional steps before the layoffs can be implemented. The company did not provide a country-by-country breakdown of the positions affected by the restructuring.

As part of the overhaul, Uber said it had reduced by 20 per cent the number of employees operating seven or more organisational layers below the CEO. It also cut by nearly 50 per cent the number of teams with only one or two direct reports.

The company is also merging several operations and technology teams. Its three delivery operations covering restaurants, retail and direct delivery will be consolidated, while its Core Services Engineering and Science teams will also be combined.

Khosrowshahi said the restructuring would help reduce costs, with the savings expected to be redirected towards growth, innovation and other strategic priorities for the coming years.

Uber Tightens Remote Work Policy

Alongside the job cuts, Uber is significantly tightening its remote-working policy.

The company said most employees who currently work remotely would be required to return to the office, leaving only about 1 per cent of its workforce fully remote.

For employees covered by Uber’s hybrid work arrangement, the company said the existing requirement of working from an office three days a week would remain in place.

Uber also plans to concentrate its global teams primarily in New York and San Francisco, while regional, local and technology teams will operate from designated office hubs.

The latest restructuring represents a significant organisational shift for Uber as the company seeks to operate with fewer management layers, clearer responsibilities and a more concentrated workforce while directing resources towards areas it considers critical to future growth.
