Uncertainty is growing in Rivers State as political stakeholders await clarity on the 2027 governorship race, with reports suggesting that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is consulting on possible successors to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
A proposed coalition involving both ruling and opposition figures is said to be in the works, aimed at producing a consensus candidate. However, no official endorsement has been made.

Sources familiar with the discussions told The Nation that two names—House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and South-South Development Commission Executive Director Marcus Eji—have emerged in early considerations. Both are believed to have close ties to Wike.
Governor Fubara has yet to declare his political intentions, fueling speculation about his next move. Analysts say his silence has added to the uncertainty, especially following the political crisis that affected his support base.
Wike, speaking on the matter, dismissed ethnic considerations in leadership selection, emphasizing competence and sincerity over regional identity. He also stated that he has not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Political insiders suggest that the coalition’s strategy may depend on whether Fubara decides to seek re-election. If he runs, a challenger may emerge within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). If not, the coalition could field a candidate under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite concerns about his political standing, a source close to the governor insisted that the decision to run remains entirely his, adding that his support base could still be revived.
The evolving situation highlights a deepening divide between Wike and Fubara, setting the stage for a potentially intense political contest in Rivers State.
