According to the information provided by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the latest decisions affect a total of 12 countries whose TPS designations have been terminated or are subject to termination. Somalia’s TPS designation ended on August 14, 2026, while South Sudan’s termination took effect on August 7, 2026. USCIS said former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem determined, after reviewing conditions and consulting relevant US government agencies, that the two countries no longer met the statutory requirements for TPS.

TPS is a temporary humanitarian immigration protection granted to eligible nationals of designated countries experiencing conditions such as armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary circumstances. Beneficiaries can generally obtain protection from removal and employment authorisation during the designated period. However, ending TPS does not automatically mean that every affected person will be deported, as individuals may have other legal immigration options. USCIS also noted that court proceedings have affected some terminations, including those involving Ethiopia, Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua.
