Michael Gonzales, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs for Africa and the Middle East, said criminal networks were increasingly considering Africa as an alternative route for trafficking synthetic drugs.

Gonzales gave the warning on Tuesday during a visit to the headquarters of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abuja, where he commended the agency for dismantling four methamphetamine laboratories in Nigeria this year.

According to the US official, the operations demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led investigations, inter-agency collaboration and coordinated law enforcement efforts in combating drug trafficking.

“The four meth lab busts just this year alone are a testament to the deployment of some of the best practices in our tradecraft, the intelligence-based knowledge collection, the coordination across national lines and agency lines, the operational excellence that goes into the actual bust, and then the interrogations, the investigations and prosecutions,” Gonzales said.

He described Nigeria as a strategic partner in international counter-narcotics efforts, citing the country’s economic importance and the NDLEA’s record of operational successes.

Gonzales explained that he selected Nigeria as his first destination after assuming office about four months ago because of the agency’s achievements and its longstanding partnership with the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

The US official stressed that drug trafficking was an international crime that required cooperation across national borders, noting that successful operations in one country could have wider implications for drug markets and public safety elsewhere.

“The reality of the narcotics trade is international. It knows no boundaries, very few constraints,” he said, adding that counter-narcotics efforts ultimately benefit both Nigerian and American communities.

Gonzales also highlighted more than four decades of US experience supporting international counter-narcotics operations through training, equipment and cooperation with partner agencies.

He warned that changing trafficking patterns required countries to strengthen intelligence sharing and coordinate their responses to criminal networks seeking new production centres and trafficking routes.

The warning underscores the importance of Nigeria’s efforts to disrupt illicit drug production and prevent the country from becoming a major hub for synthetic narcotics trafficking.
