The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has clarified why it declined to approve a venue for a planned lecture by former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The university explained that the decision was based on procedural and security concerns, not on the personality or status of the invited speaker. The clarification followed public reactions after Obi announced that his scheduled keynote lecture at the institution had been cancelled.

According to reports, the former Anambra State governor had planned to speak at the university before proceeding to Ibadan for an opposition summit. However, he later disclosed that the event would no longer hold, adding that similar cancellations had occurred multiple times in the past.

In a statement issued by the institution’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the university stated that the organizers failed to provide sufficient notice and key details about the event.
The statement revealed that relevant information, including specifics about the program and invited guests, was only submitted on Friday—just a day before the scheduled lecture. This, the university noted, made it difficult to carry out essential preparations.
OAU emphasized that events involving high-profile figures require adequate planning time to ensure proper coordination. This includes arranging logistics, securing venues, and working closely with security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Due to the limited timeframe, the university said it could not complete the necessary arrangements to guarantee the safety of attendees, staff, and the general public. As a result, approval for the use of Oduduwa Hall—the proposed venue—was not granted.
The institution stressed that its decision was guided strictly by safety considerations and adherence to established protocols. It also reiterated that the move should not be interpreted as a slight against Obi or any political figure.
The development has sparked discussions around event planning standards in academic institutions and the importance of compliance with administrative procedures, especially when hosting prominent personalities.
While the lecture did not proceed as planned, OAU’s response underscores its commitment to maintaining order, safety, and due process within its campus environment.
