Armed personnel from the Nigerian Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday morning, allegedly assaulted PUNCH correspondent Dare Olawin and several others at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) office. The military officers stormed the premises in a violent response to the disconnection of their base from the power supply.

Journalist, IKEDC Staff Attacked by Military Officers

The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. at the IKEDC headquarters, located opposite MITV in Ikeja. According to reports, Olawin had arrived at the office to join other journalists scheduled to cover an event in Adiyan, Ogun State.

However, before they could depart, Air Force personnel spotted the journalists inside a coaster bus, forcibly dragged them out, and subjected them to physical assault. The military officers forced them to sit on the floor, confiscated personal belongings, and issued threats of violence.

Among the seized items were Olawin’s Android phone, a small Itel phone, and a white power bank. Witnesses reported that the officers threatened to shoot him if he attempted to speak.

Military Officers Take Over IKEDC Office

Eyewitnesses revealed that the operation was led by a female Air Force officer, who, along with her team, took full control of the IKEDC office for over an hour and a half.

During this time, they assaulted staff members and other civilians present, blocking access roads to the premises and preventing any interference from external parties.

The military officers reportedly demanded an immediate restoration of electricity to their barracks, forcing IKEDC engineers and drivers to accompany them back to the base.

Attack Linked to Power Disconnection

Sources indicate that the Air Force base was disconnected from the electricity supply, prompting the extreme response from military personnel. However, the situation escalated beyond expectations, with journalists, staff, and bystanders caught in the crossfire of their aggressive reaction.

Calls for Investigation and Accountability

The assault has sparked outrage among journalists and civil rights groups, with calls for an immediate investigation into the military’s actions. Many are demanding that the Nigerian Air Force take responsibility for the attack and ensure that those involved face disciplinary action.

As of now, neither the Air Force nor IKEDC has officially commented on the incident. However, pressure is mounting on authorities to address the abuse of power and prevent future occurrences of military brutality against civilians.
