The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of indirectly restoring fuel subsidy, questioning the government’s position following a recent reduction in petrol prices.

The party’s National Secretary, Ayodele Adebayo, raised the concern while responding to questions from Vanguard, arguing that the price reduction had raised questions about how the government was managing the petroleum market after announcing the removal of subsidy. He asked whether the development amounted to what he described as paying subsidy through the back door.
Adebayo also rejected Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele’s warning that restoring fuel subsidy could cause the naira to depreciate to ₦4,000 against the dollar.
The APM official questioned the basis of the projection and accused the government of using it to defend its position on subsidy removal. He further challenged Oyedele’s reported comments about investors losing confidence in opposition parties, questioning the nature of the investments attracted under the current administration.
The party secretary also blamed government economic policies for increasing pressure on businesses and households, arguing that some companies had been forced to close amid rising operating costs.
Adebayo said the APM supported a petroleum pricing system that would ease the burden on Nigerians, insisting that citizens should not have to spend nearly all their earnings on fuel. However, the party’s allegation of a subsidy restoration remains its interpretation of the recent price reduction; a fall in petrol prices alone does not establish that the government has resumed subsidy payments.
