Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged the Federal Government to disclose who ordered the shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, insisting that Nigerians still deserve answers six years after the incident.

‘I’d Rather Go To Prison Than Lose My Phone’ — Dangote

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, raised the demand in a post on his X account on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as he criticised the government’s handling of the incident and its failure, in his view, to deliver accountability. He argued that the questions surrounding the October 20, 2020, shooting remained unresolved and called for transparency over the circumstances that led to the violence.

Atiku also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the rising cost of living, citing petrol prices of ₦1,405 per litre as an example of the economic pressure facing households. He said high transportation costs were making it increasingly difficult for Nigerians to afford food, education and housing, while some workers were struggling to maintain their jobs because their salaries could no longer cover commuting expenses.

To illustrate the problem, he cited the account of a woman who reportedly resigned because the cost of getting to work had become unsustainable. Atiku said the situation reflected the broader difficulties facing workers and young Nigerians amid rising prices and shrinking purchasing power.

The ADC presidential candidate said his proposed Economic Recovery Plan would seek to ease the burden through support for locally refined petroleum products, stronger domestic production, protection for minimum-wage earners and assistance for students. He also pledged measures to reduce government waste and improve economic opportunities.

Atiku maintained that Nigerians deserved both accountability over the Lekki shooting and an economy in which employment could provide a decent standard of living. His comments come as the country marks the anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, which called for an end to police brutality and greater accountability in law enforcement.
